SLU Strong Start Sends Knights to 13-8 Loss

Potsdam, NY – Both the offense and defense came out strong for St. Lawrence in the first quarter putting the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team on its heels early, and the Golden Knights were not able to fully recover in a 13-8 Liberty League defeat on Wednesday evening at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 9-6 overall and 3-5 in the Liberty League while St. Lawrence picked up a key win to move to 7-6 and 4-4 in conference, including what could be an important tiebreaker against Clarkson. The Green and Gold face Bard on Saturday in the team's final home regular-season contest.

SLU scored in the opening minute of the game to take a lead that the visitors would never relinquish, but equally important to the Saints' strong offensive start was their defense, as Clarkson was held without a shot in the opening quarter and did not get one on goal until early in the second quarter. The Knights ended a near 20-minute stretch without a goal when Isabella Koproski scored to trim the deficit to 4-1 at 10:44 in the second period. Two minutes later, the Knights scored again, while also slowing SLU's offense down. However, three goals in a stretch of just over five minutes allowed the Saints to gain a five-goal advantage, though the margin settled at four at the break when Brooklynne Perrigo scored in the last minute of the half.

Clarkson suffered from another lengthy stretch without a goal overlapping the end of the second quarter and the start of the third, going 19-plus minutes without a score. Both teams got going on offense in the fourth, but the trading of goals was not what the Knights were looking for in their comeback attempt. Cassin and Perrigo scored early and midway through the fourth, pulling Clarkson within five at 7:24. St. Lawrence always had a response, halting Clarkson's brief run with a goal by Jolie Osborne at 6:24 to all but end any hope of a victory for the home team.

Perrigo finished the game with three goals to lead the Knights on offense, with Gabby Cranfield and Isabella Koproski chipping in two points each (1-1-2). Makenna Cassin also had two goals, three groundballs, three caused turnovers, and two draws for Clarkson. Mea Tranquilli caused three turnovers, setting a new single-season record for that category at Clarkson with 34, which surpassed Madelynn Barnum (32 in 2023) and Nikki Corso (32 in 2009) as previous record holders.

For SLU, Tallis Tarbell led the way with five goals and three caused turnovers and Cate Rathnam added four points on three goals and an assist. Kelsey O'Brien produced four groundballs and two caused turnovers and Keira Dodd nabbed seven draw controls.

St. Lawrence finished with modest margins in shots (29-20), groundballs (22-17) and draw controls (14-9). Riley Donovan made eight saves for Clarkson and Zoe Froimovitz had seven stops for the Saints.
