Emerson Has Career-High 19 Saves, But Knights Fall Late to Skidmore

Potsdam, NY - Senior Griffin Emerson made 19 saves over the course of four quarters for the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team, but Skidmore scored when it counted late, picking up five goals in the final five minutes to down the Golden Knights 11-7 in Liberty League play on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 7-4 overall and 1-3 in the Liberty League, while Skidmore improved to 10-2 and 3-1. Clarkson is at home against St. Lawrence on Wednesday.

The Thoroughbreds jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the opening seven-plus minutes, but Clarkson regrouped to get back within 4-3 by the end of the first quarter, with all three goals coming out of the stick of Donnie Duffus. Skidmore's last goal of the quarter came with just under five minutes remaining in the period, and the Thoroughbreds would not score again for nearly 35 minutes.

Clarkson's defense truly clamped down on the Thoroughbreds in the second and third quarters, with Emerson making a number of saves high and low and also serving as a key player on clears, one time nearly scoring a goal himself as he went most of the field for a shot that just went high. A late long outlet from Marc Gadbois that connected with Joseph Killcommons in the waning seconds of the third broke the scoreless run by Skidmore.

The Knights led by two with three minutes off the clock in the fourth, but Skidmore rallied with a goal less than a minute later. Conor Geier scored a clutch goal from in close at 4:40 to tie the game, leading to a Skidmore burst that saw the Thoroughbreds regain the lead and then pull away late.

Skidmore finished with a 40-34 edge in shots and a 30-19 advantage in shots goal, while the Knights had a 31-26 advantage in groundballs. Emerson topped his previous career-best by one with 19 saves for Clarkson and Gadbois had 12 saves for Skidmore.

Robert Fox led the Knights offense with five points, scoring a goal and assisting on four others. Duffus added in three goals for Clarkson. Dylan COan had six groundballs and Emerson also posted five groundballs.

For Skidmore, Michael Aiello had four points on three goals and an assist and both Joseph Killcommons and Conor Geier had three goals (2-1-3). Wilder Finkel was 9-for-18 on faceoffs and had seven groundballs while Killcommons also chipped in four groundballs.
