Duffus Nets Game-Winner in Final Overtime Seconds, Knights Down SLU 11-10

Potsdam, NY – Freshman Donnie Duffus played the hero for the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team on Wednesday afternoon, as his goal in the waning seconds of overtime lifted the Golden Knights to an 11-10 victory over Route 11 rival St. Lawrence in Liberty League play at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights got a much-needed win in conference, improving to 8-4 overall and 2-3 in the Liberty League, while St. Lawrence fell to 9-5 and 3-2. It was Clarkson's second win over a ranked team this year, downing SLU (currently 19th) and Ithaca (currently 18th).

In the opening quarter, the two teams were even on offense in terms of shots, but it was St. Lawrence that was finding open spots in the Golden Knights' defense, picking up four goals in the opening 15 minutes. Two came in less than a minute and then two more were scored late in the quarter, again not separated by much time.

Although Clarkson trimmed the margin to one early in the second quarter, St. Lawrence again had a pair of goals in quick succession to help the Saints build a 6-3 advantage near the midway point of the period. However, a penalty was called on the Saints and Clarkson used the man-advantage as a way to shift the momentum. Robert Fox scored on a shot on the inside post from the right side only 13 seconds into the man-up opportunity, and then he found Connor Holly on the doorstep of the crease 42 seconds later to pull the Knights back within one. Those two goals fired up the Knights and the team scored two more goals in the final four minutes to take a narrow 7-6 advantage into the locker room at the half.

Clarkson scored a highlight reel goal at the start of the third when James Auszura found Robert Fox on a quick break, with Fox flipping the ball behind his back into the net on the opposite side of the crease just 26 seconds in. Despite that goal and another a few minutes later, though, Clarkson couldn't shake the Saints, as St. Lawrence's defense held the Knights without a goal for nearly 18 minutes crossing into the fourth quarter. Clarkson's defenders did their part at the other end, too, though, making sure that the Saints remained behind. It was Ian Erskine's man-up goal that broke the scoreless run for the Knights at 9:08 in the fourth, but less than a minute later, the Saints made sure to keep things safe off a score from Cam Croasdaile.

St. Lawrence tied the game up at 10-10 late in the fourth quarter when Dan Anderson caused a turnover in the Clarkson end and ran down the left sideline, holding the ball himself and using a quick dodge to come back from going deeper in the Clarkson defensive zone and creating enough space to find the back of the net, just inside the near post with 2:51 to go.

The Saints won the ensuing faceoff and held the ball for a bit, but Clarkson was able to gain possession when Griffin Emerson smothered a shot attempt by Henry Crean. The Knights went to the other end and called a timeout but a double team behind the SLU goal created a turnover to give the Saints one last chance after their clear. Jack Garvey and Dylan Coan did their part to separate Daniel Mahoney from the ball on the side of the crease, sending the game to overtime.

In the overtime session, St. Lawrence had a chance after an early turnover by the Knights, but the Saints gave the ball right back when Jamie Rosenzwieg and Cam Croasdaile couldn't connect on a pass thanks to just enough of a check from Dylan Coan created a turnover as the ball rolled out near midfield. That gave Clarkson an extended possession for the remainder of the contest. Clarkson had a couple of chances and off a save from SLU's Heath Mann, the Knights were the beneficiary of an illegal body check call just outside of the crease. Clarkson held the ball for close to the full 60 seconds before taking a shot, and Mann got just enough of a shot from Fox to allow the Knights another shot clock. From there, the team held the ball on the left side, as Donnie Duffus heard the countdown of the final seconds and threw a shot on goal, just sneaking through the wickets of Mann with only a tick left on the clock.

Fox finished with six points on three goals and three assists, including the 100th point of his career in the second quarter. Will Goyette added three goals while both Erskine and Duffus each scored twice. Jack Garvey caused three turnovers, and Joe Porto produced four groundballs and two caused turnovers. Griffin Emerson made 15 saves in the win.

For SLU, Daniel Mahoney scored three goals, Dan Anderson had three points (2-1-3) and Jamie Rosenzwieg had three points (1-2-3). Drew Knight added nine groundballs and Anderson also posted six groundballs with two caused turnovers. Heath Mann notched 16 saves for the Saints.
