Emerson Matches Career-High for Saves in 14-6 Win at Geneseo

Geneseo, NY – For the third straight game, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team rode its defense to another impressive victory, holding off SUNY Geneseo's offense throughout Saturday's contest in a 14-6 non-league victory.

The Golden Knights improved to 3-0 on the season while Geneseo fell to 1-3. Next on the docket for the Golden Knights is Plattsburgh State, with the game being played in Potsdam on Wednesday afternoon.

Clarkson opened Saturday's contest with two goals in the first three minutes but Geneseo responded with two in the middle of the quarter. That would be the last time that the home Knights would challenge Clarkson on the scoreboard as William Goyette and James O'Rourke each scored in the final minutes of the quarter and Clarkson added three more goals at the start of the second before Geneseo finally responded with its third goal, making it 7-3 with just under five minutes to go on the half. One more goal by Geneseo tightened the gap to three scores by the break.

Clarkson was able to limit Geneseo's shots on goal to just three in the third quarter, allowing the Golden Knights to pull away thanks to a 4-0 period. Alex Alfieri scored early in the third and Robert Fox then assisted on three goals in the final 11 minutes of the period, finding Connor Holly, Alfieri on the man-up, and then Hopkins in the final seconds, to push the advantage to 11-4.

After an early goal in the fourth, Clarkson was content to run the clock, not scoring again for nearly nine minutes while also limiting Geneseo's chances. Late in the contest, the home Knights did pick up two more goals to narrow the gap to eight by game's end.

Senior goalkeeper Griffin Emerson tied his career-high with 18 saves in 56:50 of game time, a figure he had recorded three other times in the past two seasons. Robert Fox led the offense with seven points on a goal and six assists while also adding five groundballs. Alex Alfieri (4-0-4), William Goyette (2-1-3), and Connor Holly (3-0-3) also were busy on offense. Tristen Dillon and Dylan Coan each contributed four groundballs for Clarkson.

For Geneseo, Ben Bradshaw ended with 16 saves. Ryan Trebing was the lone Geneseo player to have a multi-point game, scoring one goal and one assist. Cole Parker had five groundballs and Josh Knapp posted four caused turnovers.
