Knights Fall in Pair at Cortland on Sunday

Cortland, NY – Falling behind in both games early, the Clarkson University Softball team mounted a significant comeback in game one against Cortland State, but ultimately the Golden Knights dropped a pair to the Red Dragons, 7-6 and 8-0 on Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 2-11 on the year while Cortland moved to 8-5. Clarkson is looking for potential make up games this week, but is currently slated to play SUNY Potsdam on Wednesday and St. Lawrence University on Saturday.

The first game appeared to be ending early as Cortland put up runs in each of the first four innings while holding Clarkson off the board and without a hit in its at bats, but the Golden Knights put together a comeback in the late innings with the game-tying run on third to end the game. Cortland started the contest with two runs in the bottom of the first thanks to a home run from Laila Smith and then the Red Dragons added a run with an RBI double by Katie Stork in the second that made it 3-0. In the third, Kayla Pendergast singled through the right side for a 4-0 score, and later in the frame Kaeli McAnally stole home with some head's up base running as she swiped the base when the Knights attempted a back pick at first base. Cortland tacked on two more runs in the fourth, the first coming on a single up the middle by Shelby LaMont and the latter on a bases loaded single from Pendergast.

Clarkson began its comeback in the top of the fifth when Kelsea Flanagan ripped the first pitch she saw over the left field line, a seemingly meaningless solo shot that made it 7-1. However, the Knights picked up three more in the top of the six after Cortland was finally held of the board in the bottom half of the previous inning. Isabel Haspil lofted a shot over the left-center wall for a two-run shot to put the score at 7-3 and later in the inning Lexi Rydelek doubled to center, plating Ry Garcia for a 7-4 tally. In the top of the seventh, Maddie Throumoulos worked the count full before drawing a leadoff walk and then moved to third on a double to left by Emily Martin. Ryleigh Fontana followed with a single over the infield to left to score Throumoulos and then moved up to second on the throw to the plate to keep Emily Martin from scoring. Martin would come home on Isabel Haspil's groundout to second, for a 7-6 score with the game-tying run at third. However, Ry Garcia would fly out to left in foul territory to end the contest.

Game two started much the same as the opener, as the Red Dragons picked up three in the first inning. Consecutive hits with two outs put runners on first and second, setting up a line drive single by Shannon Scotto to plate the first run, though it appeared as if the throw and tag beat the runner at the plate. That call proved costly to the Knights when Kaeli McAnally singled and a miscue in the outfield allowed two more to score, making it 3-0 early.

Two innings later, the Red Dragons scored four times to take a 7-0 lead for the second time on the day. McAnally doubled to right center to plate a pair, an infield error allowed McAnally to score, and another run came in on a sacrifice fly by Morgan Ellerbrock.

The Golden Knights put runners on in each of their five at bats, but the biggest threat to score came in the fourth when the bases were loaded thanks to back-to-back singles from Rydelek and Flanagan and then a walk by Brooke McConnell. However, two groundballs to the left side, the first of which cut a runner down at the plate, ended the threat. Clarkson also had runners on first and third with one out in the fifth, but a strikeout and ground out concluded that chance.

Cortland put the game away in the bottom half of the fifth. Morgan Ellerbrock walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on a ground out. LaMont followed with a two-out double to right center to plate Ellerbrock with the Red Dragons' eighth run of the game, finishing things off in five.
