Potsdam Takes Twin Bill Against Knights

Potsdam, NY - Second chances due to errors helped create some big innings as the Clarkson University Softball team suffered a doubleheader defeat against SUNY Potsdam on Wednesday, falling 11-3 and 9-0 in a pair of five inning games at Potsdam's Maxcy Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 2-13 overall while the Bears improved to 7-7 on the year. The weather may prove challenging this weekend as Clarkson is scheduled to host St. Lawrence University on Saturday afternoon.

In the opening game, the Knights found themselves in an early hole scoring a run in the bottom of the first after stranding a runner at third in the top half of the frame. Payton St. Clair singled in Alexys Rosick for Potsdam's opening run, but then really extended the margin in the second when the Knights committed a number of errors to allow the Bears some additional opportunities. The first run of the second came across on a single by Emily Birmingham that found its way through the left side. Alexys Rosick found the same spot for another RBI single for a 3-0 lead. Chloe Kuttruff singled up the middle to plate another run and Sam Horne later followed with a sac fly for a 5-0 Potsdam lead. Two more runs came around on Kaidence Cronin's single, a throwing error allowed another to score and Hannah Fagan's infield single plated the eighth run of the frame, putting the tally at 9-0 through two.

Clarkson picked up a pair of runs in the top of the third as Emily Martin doubled and then advanced to third on a passed ball, but that mattered little when Lexi Rydelek drilled her second home run of the season, going to straight away to center field with her hard hit. Clarkson tacked on another run in fourth on a bases loaded line drive single by Emily Martin, but the Knights were unable to push any more runs across. That inability to score any further forced the game to end early when Potsdam plated a pair in the bottom half of the fifth. With two on in scoring position and one out, the first Potsdam run scored on a ground out and then the second came around off Sam Horne's single that just snuck inside the first base line.

Isabel Haspil was 2-for-3 and Emily Martin went 2-for-2 in the opening contest, while Alexys Rosick had four hits in four tries for the Bears. Sophia Pleat also was 2-for-3 for Potsdam with two runs scored while Payton St. Clair, Sam Horne, and Kaidence Cronin each drove in two in the win.

Game two saw the two teams trade zeroes for the first handful of innings. Clarkson had a chance in the first after a lead off double by Isabel Haspil and a wild pitch that advanced her to third with none out. However, a ground out and two pop ups ended the threat for the Knights. Potsdam had runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom half of the frame but came up empty, and a fine defensive player by Genevieve Mucitelli in the bottom of the second, a quick 5-3 double play, kept the Bears off the scoreboard once again. That would change in the bottom half of the inning as Potsdam plated six in the frame. Payton St. Clair drove in Rosick for the first run of the game and Mia Cooper followed with a two-out single to make it 2-0. Maddalyn Wasserman followed with a two-run homer to left for a 4-0 advantage, but the Bears were not done with their busy inning. Kaidence Cronin restarted the rally with a single, Hannah Fagan followed with another single, and Emily Birmingham's double to center field to plate the prior to hitters.

Potsdam all but closed out the contest in the bottom of the fourth by scoring three more times. The first run came around on a Cassidy Richards hit and then Kaidence Cronin sent two more around on a double to right center.

Clarkson had only three hits in the second game as Sam Horne threw a five-inning shutout. Isabel Haspil had a pair of hits, including a double, and Kendall Cuyler added the third hit for the Knights. Horne had just one strikeout for Potsdam, but induced nine pop ups and five ground outs.
