Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Fast Start Sends Clarkson Past RIT, 15-10

Rochester, NY – Riley Donovan made 10 saves and Morgan Kenna scored four goals as the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team utilized another strong start to outpace RIT 15-10 in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 8-2 overall and 3-1 in the Liberty League while RIT dropped to 8-2 and 2-2. Clarkson is on the road for a pair of key games next weekend, taking on Skidmore College and Union College.

Just like the team did two weeks ago when at RPI, the Golden Knights rushed out to an early lead to surprise the home team and force them to take an early timeout. Clarkson scored while up a player just three minutes into the game when Gabby Cranfield scored and then near the midway point of the quarter, the Knights tallied four goals in a stretch of five minutes, including another player-up goal by Makenna Cassin. Clarkson finished the quarter with a 5-1 lead thanks in large part to its 11-2 advantage in shots.

In the second quarter, RIT gained the advantage in shots (10-6), but it didn't show up on the scoreboard since Riley Donovan made three saves while allowing three goals. Fortunately for Donovan and the Knights, Clarkson's offense was able to match the Tigers' output, keeping the margin at four goals heading into the intermission.

The third quarter resembled the second, as again RIT had a slight advantage in shots, but it was the Knights that came out on top for the 15-minute stretch when Maeve Bartell scored in the final minute, putting the tally at 11-6. That goal proved to truly put the momentum on the Knights' side, as the Green and Gold scored three times in barely two minutes at the start of the fourth, including goals from Lauren McCorry, Morgan Kenna, and Brooklynne Perrigo, making it 14-6. Clarkson kept its significant advantage through most of the fourth, though the Tigers did score twice in the final minute to put the final gap at five.

Kenna scored her four goals on just four total shots, while Perrigo added four points on three goals and an assist and Sydney Nakas added four points with two goals and two assists. Karli Scherpf posted two goals and an assist and Gabby Cranfield did the reverse with a goal and two assists for her three points. Kenna led the team with four groundballs, Mea Tranquilli caused three turnovers and added three groundballs and Makenna Cassin forced four turnovers as well.

For RIT, Zoe Heffernan led the team on offense with a goal and three assists for four points. Grace Validzic and Eliza Barton each scored three goals, Milena Stephen won 12 draw controls, and Jocelyn Lee notched three caused turnovers.

Donovan made 10 saves for the Knights and Ellie Ruddy had six saves for RIT. The Tigers finished with a 32-30 edge in shots, but Clarkson had the advantage in quality shots, putting 18 on goal while RIT had 14. Clarkson lost the battle on draws 21-6, but took advantage of 19 RIT turnovers.
