Knights Fourth Quarter Rally Comes Up Short in 16-13 Loss at Skidmore

Saratoga Springs, NY – Trading momentum seemingly every time the clock reset at the start of a quarter, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team suffered a 16-13 loss to Skidmore College in Liberty League action Friday afternoon.

The Golden Knights dropped to 8-3 overall and 3-2 in conference games while Skidmore got a much-needed win, moving to 6-6 and 2-3 in league games. Clarkson takes on Union tomorrow afternoon.

At the start, Skidmore was finding the back of the net with regularity, scoring on six of its eight shots (all on goal) in the quarter. Lily Hudner scored twice in the first four minutes and was then followed by two goals near the midway point of the period by Julia Cafasso. The Knights got on the board thanks to a Gabby Cranfield goal, but the two teams ended up trading scores for the rest of the period, allowing Skidmore to have a 6-2 lead through the opening 15 minutes.

The second quarter was all Clarkson, as the Green and Gold took advantage of a flurry of cards called on the Thoroughbreds following an uptick in physical play by the home team. Clarkson hard already narrowed the margin to 7-5 when Cranfield scored at 7:06 in the second, but a green card and two yellows allowed the Knights to take advantage while up a player in the field. Annie Dufault scored a player-up goal on a free-position shot at 4:39 and Lauren McCorry did the same at 3:18. Sydney Nakas then came from behind the net to sneak one through at 2:52, giving Clarkson its first lead of the game.

The halftime intermission allowed Skidmore to make some adjustments, and the Thoroughbreds held the Knights off the scoreboard for the next 15 minutes while scoring five straight to regain the lead. The biggest stretch came near the midway point of the quarter, when three Skidmore goals were scored in less than 70 seconds, turning what once was a tie game into a three-goal advantage for the Thoroughbreds.

Clarkson went back on the attack at the start of the fourth and was maintaining the script of trading scoring momentum. Karli Scherpf, Nakas, and Cranfield each scored in the first five minutes of the fourth to draw the Knights back to within one, 12-11. This time Skidmore had an answer, picking up three goals in just over 90 seconds to return the gap back to four by the midway point of the period. That run proved to be enough cushion for Skidmore to hold on for the win.

Gabby Cranfield finished with seven points on the day, scoring four goals of her own and assisting on three others. Karli Scherpf, Sydney Nakas, and Makenna Cassin each scored two goals, and Scherpf added four groundballs and two caused turnovers. Mea Tranquilli also posted four caused turnovers.

For Skidmore, Lily Hudner led the way with four goals while both Allison Brewer and Julia Cafasso scored three times. Cafasso also chipped in six draws for the Thoroughbreds, and Annie Campbell had four groundballs and caused two turnovers.

Skidmore had a significant advantage in draw controls (22-9), but the Knights combated that with a significant gap in turnovers, committing just 12 to Skidmore's 22. Clarkson ended with a 32-28 advantage in shots, but Skidmore had a 24-21 lead in shots on goal. The Knights also edged the Thoroughbreds in groundballs (16-13). Riley Donovan finished with eight saves for Clarkson and Tatum Walsh had eight stops for Skidmore.
