Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Knights Roll to 22-5 Win Over Bridgewater State

Bridgewater, MA – By the end of the first quarter the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team nearly had forced a running clock in its non-league game against Bridgewater State, and the Golden Knights never looked back from their dominant start in a 21-5 victory on Tuesday afternoon.

The Green and Gold improved to 6-1 on the season, posting their sixth straight victory, while Bridgewater State fell to 1-6 on the year. Clarkson will face a pair of strong opponents this weekend when it hosts William Smith on Friday and then Ithaca on Saturday.

Only 21 seconds into the game, the Golden Knights found themselves ahead after a Brooklynne Perrigo goal and the team's offense was virtually unstoppable in the opening quarter. Clarkson had six goals in barely seven minutes of play and was up eight before the Bears finally responded with a goal. A score from Leah Hoeksema with only 16 seconds left in the quarter gave the Knights their 10th goal of the quarter and a significant advantage.  Gabby Cranfield had solid numbers for a full game just in the first quarter, posting three goals and three assists, while Sydney Nakas wasn't far behind with a goal and three assists.

The second quarter saw Bridgewater open with two goals in the first three minutes, but the Knights quickly squashed any momentum for the home team. Nakas scored less than two minutes later to put Clarkson back on track, and three straight goals from Karli Scherpf had the clock running for the Knights.

By the end of the third quarter, Clarkson had hit the 20-goal mark and the only thing that kept the Knights from challenging their program record for goals in a game was self-imposed, as the squad took the foot off the gas offensively in the fourth. It did mark the third time this year that Clarkson scored 20 goals or more, matching their 22-goal effort against Plattsburgh State last week.

Cranfield led the team's offense with eight points on three goals and five assists, while Sydney Nakas added seven points on two goals and five assists and Karli Scherpf notched six points on five goals and one assist. Makenna Cassin had another strong all-around effort with four goals, three caused turnovers, and three groundballs.

Meredith Sylvia had the majority of the offense for the Bears, scoring four goals. Taylor Carter also chipped in three points with a goal and two assists.

Clarkson controlled the game from start to finish, outshooting Bridgewater State 39-10 overall and 33-9 in terms of shots on goal. The Knights had 17 groundballs to the Bears' five and helped force Bridgewater State into 18 turnovers (11 caused). Riley Donovan had one save in the opening 30 minutes and Jennaca McGill posted three saves in the final 30 minutes for Clarkson. Sara Skaff had seven saves in the first half for Bridgewater State. Gianna Scarpelli (three saves) and Riley Guenette (one save) each played a full quarter in the crease for the Bears.
