Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Knights Fall to Nationally-Ranked William Smith, 16-0

Potsdam, NY – Producing groups of goals in the second portion of each of the first two quarters, William Smith was able to produce a sizeable early lead over the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team, and the Herons never looked back with a 16-0 defeat over the Golden Knights on Friday evening at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights saw their six-game winning streak come to an end, falling to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the Liberty League. William Smith improved to 6-1 and 2-0 in league contests. Clarkson will face another strong conference foe on Saturday when it takes on Ithaca College.

While the Herons scored a goal in the first minute of Friday's contest, it took some time before they would record another, pointing to what might be a very low scoring contest. However, William Smith scored five times in a stretch of less than four minutes from 6:08 to 2:37, with each coming from the stick of a different player, to push the visitors to a 6-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. The second period was similar, though it took almost five minutes for William Smith to score. Again, however, four goals from four different players were tallied in a stretch of less than four minutes. The Herons were patient in their offense, scoring on all five of their shots in the period.

Though quiet, Clarkson's offense was not non-existent, as the team was outshot only 24-12 in the game, but the 19-7 margin shots on goal and opportunities at the net proved the difference. Each team was fairly even in groundballs (19-18 for William Smith), though the draws were heavily in the Herons favor (14-4).

The game marked the first time that Clarkson has been shutout since falling 17-0 to Hamilton College during the midway point of the 2010 season. Since then, Clarkson has been held to one goal three times (Union in 2010, William Smith in 2019, and St. John Fisher in 2021).

Mea Tranquilli played well defensively for the Knights, causing four turnovers and scooping up three groundballs. Makenna Cassin also had two caused turnovers and two groundballs for the Knights. Riley Donovan made three saves in the crease, and Jennaca McGill added two more saves in relief.

Mia Falco led William Smith with six points, scoring three goals and assisted on three others. Ava Keiser added three points on two goals and an assist. Grace Rund also had six draw controls and two goals. Casey Fiore had seven stops in the Herons crease.
