Knights Hot Start and Strong Defense Leads to Fifth Straight Win

Troy, NY - Yet another strong defensive effort helped the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team utilize its equally impressive offensive start as the Golden Knights won their fifth straight game with an 11-5 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday afternoon.

The win pushes the Golden Knights mark to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in Liberty League play, while the Engineers fell to 3-3 and 0-1. Clarkson is back in non-league action when the team takes on Bridgewater State.

The Golden Knights scored the first six goals of the contest and led 4-0 with just eight minutes off the clock in the first quarter. More impressively, the Knights had outshot RPI 10-0 in that span. A goal from Gabby Cranfield near the end of the quarter and then one by Karli Scherpf at the start of the second put the Green and Gold up 6-0. Consecutive goals by Camile Stackhouse finally put the Engineers on the scoreboard, but the Knights responded with two goals in the final six minutes, including one off a free-position shot by Makenna Cassin in the last 30 seconds, to give Clarkson an 8-2 lead at the break.

The third quarter was relatively quiet, as each team scored just once and the offenses remained relatively cool in the fourth as well. RPI pulled back to within five after a Stackhouse goal with 6:19 left, but the Engineers would not score again and Clarkson added an insurance goal from Lauren McCorry in the waning minutes.

Clarkson finished with a 25-13 advantage in total shots and a 17-10 lead in shots on goal and 14-11 margin for groundballs. Gabby Cranfield led the offense with five points on a goal and four assists and Karli Scherpf produced three goals and three groundballs. Cassin, Morgan Kenna, and Sydney Nakas also contributed two points each. Riley Donovan ended the game with five saves while Lillian Brady and Halley Feaga each had three saves for RPI.

Clarkson has now allowed just 14 goals over its last four games, an average of only 3.5 goals per contest.
