CU Softball Splits on Day One In Florida, Hotchkiss Throws Complete Game Shutout

Clermont, FL – On the first day of its Florida trip, the Clarkson University Softball team found itself on the opposite ends of two results, dropping its first game via run rule to Ramapo 10-1 but recovering for a 5-0 shutout win over Plymouth State in the second contest.

The Golden Knights moved to 1-3 on the year. The team faces Framingham State and Wisconsin-LaCrosse on Sunday.

In the opener, Ramapo had a run in the first, four in the second, two in the third, and three in the fourth for its tally of 10. The first run came around on an Avery Kontura double in the opening inning, and two home runs, a solo shot by Paley Sullivan and a three-run job by Kori Gargiulo accounted for the runs in the second. A pair of throwing errors allowed two runs to score in the third and a two-out error in the fourth came back to haunt the Knights, as three unearned run scored in that inning. Clarkson's lone run came in the bottom half of the fourth when Maddie Throumoulos led off with a double and eventually came around on an RBI groundout.

Game two was a second straight standout performance from sophomore pitcher Bella Hotchkiss. A few weeks ago she ended up with a no-decision after five scoreless frames against Middlebury, but this time around she stuck in the game for the full seven, allowing only two hits and no walks while striking out four to pick up the victory. Clarkson got all the runs it would need in the third inning as Isabel Haspil had a sacrifice fly to score Emily Martin and an infield single by Ivy Borkoski plated Ryleigh Fontana to make it 2-0. Clarkson tacked on three more runs for good measure in the seventh, with Haspil singling in Martin to make it 3-0 and Naomi King doubling in two more to round out the scoring.

Borkoski, Martin, and Emily Bulone each delivered two hits for the Knights in the second contest. Allie Cecere took the loss for Plymouth State but pitched well, allowing just one earned run on six hits and no walks with five strikeouts over six frames.
