Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Knights Silence Bobcats in 3-0 ECAC Hockey Game One Quarterfinals Victory

Hamden, CT – Shane Soderwall's 24 saves highlighted another stingy defensive effort by the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team this playoff season, as the Golden Knights topped Quinnipiac 3-0 in game one of the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals best-of-three series.

The Golden Knights edged over .500, improving to 17-16-3 on the year while Quinnipiac, the top seed in the ECAC playoffs, fell to 26-8-3 on the year. The two teams will play again on Saturday at 4:00 pm, with the Knights a game away from advancing to Lake Placid.

The majority of Soderwall's 24 saves came in the third period, as Clarkson held Quinnipiac to its lowest shot total of the year, and its third-lowest figure in regulation (the Golden Knights also held Quinnipiac to a season-low 20 shots in regulation and 26 overall in an overtime contest earlier this year). It was only the second time this year that the Bobcats were held off the scoresheet.

At the start of the contest, Clarkson looked more like the top seed in the conference compared to its opponents, as the Golden Knights spent much of the first period in the Quinnipiac zone, holding an 11-2 edge in shots on goal by the time the media timeout was whistled past the midway point. The first solid chance that Clarkson had was while the team was shorthanded as Shawn O'Donnell was denied on a backhand. After the Bobcats power play concluded, Clarkson went on the man-advantage a few moments later and really tacked on some shot attempts. Many of the opportunities came in close, but Quinnipiac Dylan Silverstein was able to cover up when necessary and keep the game scoreless. Quinnipiac did tighten up the shot disparity with a late power play, but Clarkson still ended the op3ning period with an 11-5 edge and the better scoring chances.

The first couple minutes of the second did not show much until Quinnipiac put together a rush that produced a pair of shots in close, both of which were denied by Shane Soderwall. Transition going the other end saw Silverstein deny Jared Mangan, but Quinnipiac's dodging of the Clarkson offense would end 45 seconds later. A simple dump in by the Knights was not cleared by the Bobcats and it allowed a pass towards the blue line to hit the stick of Bryce Sookro. Able to step into his shot as he entered the zone, Sookro ripped a shot through a screen from the right point, making it 1-0 at 2:56 in the second, with assists going to Jace Letourneau and Shawn O'Donnell.

Each team had chances while on the power play, Quinnipiac getting one near the start of the period and then a handful of seconds at the end, and Clarkson getting three opportunities to be up a skater. However, neither team ended up putting one over the goal line. Clarkson had the best opportunity after its goal when Ty Brassington lifted a pass over two defenders to break out Luka Sukovic, but his attempt was corralled by the glove of Silverstein with a little less than four minutes to play in the period. Clarkson's defense continued to stifle Quinnipiac's usually potent offense, limiting the Bobcats to only two shots on goal in the entire second period, both of which came barely two minutes into the frame.

Quinnipiac came out of the second intermission with nearly a full power play and lots of speed, as the Bobcats quickly doubled up their shot total from the previous two periods. Although the extra skater chance was an empty endeavor, Quinnipiac continued to buzz around. The Golden Knights responded with more physical play, knocking the Bobcats against the boards and often to the ice to even things back up and create some slower legs by the home team. Seconds and minutes came off the clock past the midway point of the period, creating a later than usual media timeout once Clarkson was called for a penalty. Soderwall didn't have to make many saves in the first two periods, but he was busy in the third, and made some key stops while the Knights were trying to kill of the penalty, including a one-timer from the bottom of the right circle by Andon Cerbone with only 14 seconds left in the power play.

The Bobcats pulled their goaltender with more than four minutes left in the game in an attempt to tie the game and Clarkson nearly made them pay twice. One shot missed my inches of going in and Luka Sukovic's shot from his own blue line knocked off the post with 2:39 to go. The puck luck for Quinnipiac came to an end shortly after a faceoff in the Knights' defensive zone when Tate Taylor found the middle of the vacated net at 17:55, an assist going to Matthew Mayich. Clarkson tacked on another empty net goal at 19:27 from Erik Bargholtz.

Neither team scored while on the power play, Quinnipiac going 0-for-5 and Clarkson 0-for-4. The Golden Knights finished with a 60-54 lead in total shots and a 35-24 advantage in shots on goa. Soderwall had his 24 stops for the shutout while Silverstein had 32 saves for Quinnipiac.
