Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Knights Come Up Empty in New England, Fall 4-1 to Brown

Providence, RI – Two goals early in the second period put the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team in a hole from which they could not recover as the Golden Knights suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Brown University on Saturday afternoon.

The 11th-ranked Knights fall to 19-10-3 overall and 12-6-2 in ECAC Hockey play, while Brown earned some key points, moving to 16-10-2 and 12-6-2. Clarkson will be at home next weekend to close out the regular season against Cornell and Colgate.

It was a very physical game at the start as the officials let the women play, a style that seemed likely to play in Clarkson's hands. The Knights did receive a power play chance near the midway point of the first period, but came up empty in their opportunity. The penalty kill gave Brown some renewed energy, as the Bears produced several solid shifts in succession that eventually resulted in a goal.

Clarkson cleared the zone briefly, but Brown regained possession in the neutral zone and created a rush off a line change going the other way. Jade Iginla dropped a pass back to Monique Lyons, and her first shot was blocked by a Clarkson defender, but the puck dropped right back down to her stick and Lyons knocked in a bouncing puck to make it 13:49.

The Knights returned the favor with a goal of their own about four minutes later. Brown may have been a bit too aggressive heading down ice as the three forwards couldn't put on the brakes when the Green and Gold broke up a play and had numbers in the other direction. A 4-on-2 resulted with lots of open space for Clarkson to work as Madison Chantler took the puck along the right side and then dished towards the slot for Shelby Laidlaw. She added one more pass to Sara Manness near the left circle, who finished off the play by coming back into the middle and using a backhand to beat Anya Supkofska at 17:54.

At the start of the second period, Brown reclaimed the lead on a goal by Jade Iginla. Skating through center ice, Iginla decided to throw one on the net despite a Clarkson defender being between her and the net, and her shot hit just the right spot as she went to the far post and rung one off the inside part of the iron at the 0:45 mark.

The Bears added another goal while on the power play, taking their time working the puck around the zone. Eventually, it came back around for a strong one-timer from Iginla at the left circle as she snuck one in on the near side before Holly Gruber could close the space, making it 3-1 at 6:45.

Clarkson was outshot 33-7 in the second period, including a 21-3 deficit in shots on goal, due in large part to the Knights spending much of the period down a skater and sometimes two. The Green and Gold's penalty kill, despite giving up a power play goal, played well in the frame, including a 90-second stretch while on the short end of a 5-on-3.

The Knights dominated the first part of the third period, but the team was unable to get the game back to within one goal. Brown was held without a shot on goal for the first eight minutes of the third, but once the Bears got one they converted. Off a rush from the neutral zone, Jade Iginla took a shot from the left side and Gruber made an easy pad save, but the rebound was a textbook put away by Ava DeCoste, as she stepped right in at the bottom of the slot to put the puck into the open net at 9:13.

The Bears finished with a 65-42 edge in shots and a 35-22 lead in shots on goal. Holly Gruber ended 31 saves for the Knights and Anya Supkofska had 21 stops for Brown.
