Knights' Late Comeback Bid Falls Short in 5-4 Defeat at Yale

New Haven, CT – Some unlucky bounces in the first period put the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team in an early hole, and the Golden Knights could not complete their third-period comeback attempt, suffering a 5-4 loss to Yale University on Friday night at Ingalls Rink.

The Golden Knights, ranked 11th in the most recent poll, fell to 19-9-3 overall and 12-5-2 in ECAC Hockey play, while Yale improved to 20-7-0 and 14-5-0 in conference games with its 12th straight victory. The Green and Gold look to regroup against Brown University on Saturday afternoon.

Yale was given a solid opportunity just a minute into the contest by going on the power play after an early hooking call, but the Bulldogs' strong specialty team came up short. The Bulldogs, however, maintained the pressure and scored 90 seconds after the power play ended. Molly Boyle sent a pass from behind the net back into the slot, slipping past Naomi Boucher but right to Cami Bell, and Bell finished at 4:13 to make it 1-0.

Clarkson controlled play for the rest of the period, but the Knights came up short on the scoreboard due to some mishaps with skates. The first of those went in the Knights' favor as Clarkson tied the game 1-1 thanks to a backhand shot from Shelby Laidlaw that went off the skate of Yale's Kennedy Walker while she was close in defending the crease.

With the game tied 1-1, Clarkson was primed to score again, but instead a game of inches favored the Bulldogs. The first of those came on a long stretch pass from Carina DiAntonio that just nicked the stick of Jordan Ray in the neutral zone to avoid icing. That allowed Ray to look back once the puck had bounced off the boards for a trailer and Hannah Weyerhaeuser was there in the slot for an easy glove side goal at 9:32. Seven minutes later, another fortuitous bounce worked in Yale's favor when a seemingly harmless shot from above the left circle by Sophia Levering scooted past Aneta Senkova thanks to a redirect from a Clarkson defender's blade in front. A similar goal occurred with one minute left in the period as Holly Gruber made a save on the first shot, but the rebound hit Carina DiAntonio's skate and slid in for 4-1 Yale lead.

The intermission helped settle the Knights and the second period was played without the many peaks and valleys of the first, which included a 10-0 deficit in shots in the first five minutes, an 18-4 edge for Clarkson in the middle 10 minutes, and then a 7-1 negative gap in the final five minutes. The two teams battled back and forth more evenly, as Yale did have a 10-9 edge in shots on goal while being down six shots total (21-15). Unfortunately for Clarkson, none of those shots on goal could make their way into the net while Yale added one more to its total. Around the midway point of the frame, Molly Boyle whistled a high shot from the top of the slot through layers of traffic, and the puck eluded Holly Gruber at 8:08. Unlike the many goals that ricocheted in during the first period, this shot somehow missed three Clarkson defenders and three Yale offensive players on its way into the net.

Near the start of the third period, the Golden Knights were whistled for a boarding call, losing Sena Catterall to the penalty box for a five-minute major. With nearly two minutes off the penalty kills, it was the Knights that actually picked up a goal, getting a score from Raedyn Spademan on a 2-on-1 with Greta Brezenski at 3:13.

Clarkson scored on specialty teams once again seven minutes later, pulling the Knights back within two. Off a deflection, Sena Catterall picked up possession near the edge of the right circle, but instead of taking a shot she decided to set up her teammate Janelle Evans, and Evans wasted little time with a one-timer from the other side of the slot, scoring at 10:02 and making it 5-3.

Late in the contest, the Knights were ready to pull their goalie and sent Gruber towards the bench, but Clarkson scored before the extra attacker made their way on the ice. An initial shot was denied by Yale goaltender Samson Frey, but Megan McKay snagged the rebound at the top of the crease and without adjusting her positioning, she backhanded a shot with her back to the net to score at 17:30, drawing the Knights within one.

Gruber was on the bench for the final 90 seconds of the contest as Clarkson looked to pick up the equalizer, but several near misses allowed Yale to hold on for the win.

Sara Manness extended her point-scoring streak to 13 games (16 goals, 11 assists) in the loss and Sena Catterall picked up an assist, pulling her to within one point of 100 for her Clarkson career.

Clarkson finished with a 62-55 edge in total shots but Yale led 37-28 in shots on goal. The Knights' penalty kill held Yale off the board for seven power-play minutes, while Clarkson was 1-for-4 with the extra skater. Senkova made 12 saves in the first period for the Knights and Gruber had 20 denials for Clarkson. At the other end, Frey finished with 24 saves for the Bulldogs.
