Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Knights Just Short in Comeback Bid Against RPI, 4-3

Potsdam, NY – Three goals in the first period, including two separated by less than 10 seconds, had the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team trying to dig themselves out of an early hole and the Golden Knights couldn't quite complete the comeback, falling 4-3 to Rensselaer on Friday night at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights fell to 11-5-3 overall and 5-9-3 in ECAC Hockey, while the Engineers improved to 7-20-0 and 4-11-0, gaining the season sweep against Clarkson. The Green and Gold looks to get back on track on Saturday afternoon when the team hosts Union College.

Two goals in quick success created a lopsided first period, but it was an early power play goal that put the Knights on their heels near the start. Clarkson had a power play chance in the opening minutes, only to see the Engineers kill that off and go on the power play themselves shortly after the first penalty ended. The first goal for the Engineers came when Shane Soderwall made a pad save on a shot from the right circle, but the rebound went right to the stick of Matthew Buckley on the doorstep at the left side post and he easily deposited the puck into the net at 6:03.

The second and third goals were separated by less than 10 seconds late in the period. Filip Sitar was at the left point and waited for some traffic to develop in front before he flipped a shot towards the net. His attempt hit a Clarkson player in the back, but the puck didn't bounce out very far, instead falling to the stick of Buckley. He chose not to take a shot, deciding to slide a puck to the other side of the crease for Ian Scherzer, who knocked it in via backhand at 16:19.

Off the ensuing faceoff at center ice, Clarkson turned the puck over in the neutral zone after the win and created a 2-on-1 for the other direction. Ethan Bono had the odd-man rush, but chose to keep it himself, a wise choice as he shot from the bottom of the left circle, a sniping attempt that went top shelf at 16:27.

Clarkson had a 22-12 edge in total shots in the first period, but the Engineers led 9-8 in shots on goal, converting on three of them. That total raised to four early on in the second period when RPI took advantage of a puck bouncing off a skate. Luka Sukovic was trying to keep the puck in the RPI zone near the top of the left side boards with a backhand, but unfortunately it hit a skate and scooted down the ice in the other direction. Luciano Wilson collected the loose puck along the boards in the Knights' zone and passed it over to Rainers Rullers, who made one move to elude a Clarkson defender and create some space, allowing him to flip the puck over the shoulder of Soderwall at 3:19 in the second period, putting the score at 4-0.

The Knights got on the scoreboard late in the first period in hopes of changing the momentum. Sukovic gained possession near the goal line and sent a pass back out to Matthew Mayich at the left point. Mayich took a shot from there, but Jace Letourneau would end up redirecting it on the short side, ending Nate Krawchuk's shutout bid with two minutes to go in the second period.

Clarkson got back into the game early on in the third period while the Knights were on the power play. Midway through the RPI kill, the puck went to the right side boards, drawing a significant number of players and leaving Tate Taylor all alone in front of the net. When the puck leaked out of the corner, it could not have gone to a more perfect spot, finding Taylor in the slot all by himself. He used some patience, making Krawchuk commit before going to his backhand and flipping the puck in at 3:05, making it 4-2.

Ten minutes later, the Knights were on the penalty kill due to a cross-checking call, but it mattered little at the start when it was Clarkson that would pick up a specialty teams goal. On an attempted clear, the Knights sent the puck into the neutral zone where it hit an RPI skater and bounded to the stick of Owen Van Steensel. The freshmen did the rest, racing through the neutral zone and then into the RPI offensive zone, where he used a couple of slick moves in open ice and then went top shelf to the opposite post, recording a nifty shorthanded goal at 13:00 and breathing further life into the Knights.

With a little over two minutes remaining in the contest, Clarkson pulled its goalie for an extra attacker. The Knights spent the last few moments peppering the RPI defense with some shots making it through and others going wide of their intended target. The best chance came with about 20 seconds to go when the puck found the stick of Talon Sigurdson right on the doorstep of the crease. Sigurdson picked his spot and decided to go to the far post, but Krawchuk slid over just enough to smother the attempt.

Clarkson finished with a 46-24 edge in shots on goal and a 78-36 lead in total shots. Each team scored once on the power play and the Knights also tallied while shorthanded. Soderwall had six saves in the first period and Keenan Rancier made 14 stops in the final two periods for the Knights. Krawchuk closed with 43 saves, the second most he has made this season.
