Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Knights Get Rolling After Slow Start, Down Oswego 14-11

Potsdam, NY – After an early timeout was called to regroup, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team played at a different level, rallying from an early 4-0 deficit to down Oswego State 14-11 in non-league action Saturday at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights moved to 1-1 on the season while Owego State also saw its mark evened out at 1-1. Clarkson is back in action on Wednesday when the team travels across town to take on SUNY Potsdam.

Alexis Hill scored three goals in the first six minutes of the contest to help put the Lakers on top 4-0 in the opening moments of the contest. Once a timeout was called for by coach Ben Gaebel, the Clarkson offense and defense both began to perk up from their morning doldrums. Gabby Cranfield got the Knights on the board with an unassisted goal just a minute later and Morgan Kenna found the back of the net about two minutes after that to trim the deficit to two.

From there, Clarkson won each of the last three quarters, scoring four times in each. The Knights rallied in the second with four straight goals to take a 6-5 lead, but a late score by Oswego's Addison Costello tied the game up 6-6 at the break. Clarkson would never trail again in the contest, but the Lakers kept things close throughout the third. It wasn't until back-to-back player-up goals from Cranfield and Leah Hoeksema in the opening minute in the fourth that the Knights would have a three-goal lead, and both Isabella Koproski and Makenna Cassin delivered scores by the midway point of the quarter to put the Knights up by five. Two late goals by the Lakers allowed the visitors to lessen the margin by game's end.

Gabby Cranfield had a busy game with eight points on five goals and three assists. Karli Scherpf posted three points on two goals and an assist and Sydney Nakas added a goal and two assists. Makenna Cassin also scored twice and was busy in other aspects, causing five turnovers and scooping up four groundballs.

For the Lakers, Hill scored four goals and added three groundballs. Gianna Zerrillo recorded three points on a goal and two assists and Cassidy Croce also scored two goals.

Riley Donovan made eight saves between the posts for the Golden Knights, while Alana Iacovissi played just under 50 minutes and made nine stops. Sophia Diaz played the final 10 minutes but had no saves in that stretch.
