Offense Rolls in Clarkson's 20-2 Win Over SUNY Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – An overwhelming first quarter put the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team on cruise control rather quickly, as the Golden Knights eased their way to a 20-2 win over crosstown rival SUNY Potsdam.

The Golden Knights improved to 2-1 on the year while the Bears fell to 1-1. Clarkson faces Brockport on Saturday at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights put the game away almost in the first quarter, taking an early 9-0 lead and not allowing a single shot until there was 1:02 remaining. The second quarter wasn't quite as dominant, but Clarkson still scored five more goals to take a 14-0 advantage into the halftime break.

Clarkson scored three more goals in the first five minutes of the third quarter for a 17-0 advantage, but the bears were finally able to get on the board around the midway point of that period. The Knights took their foot off the gas down the stretch, but the defense continued to shine, giving up only two shots in the first half, just three in the third quarter, and one in the fourth.

Gabby Cranfield produced a seven-point effort with three goals and four assists to lead the Clarkson offense. Karli Scherpf posted four points on three goals and an assist and Brooklynne Perrigo added three scores. Makenna Cassin scored three points on two goals and an assist while also adding two caused turnovers, three groundballs, and three draw controls. Sydney Nakas, Leah Hoeksema, and Annie Dufault each scored two goals as well.

Clarkson dominated in all facets of the game, posting a 45-6 edge in total shots, including a 32-6 edge in shots on goal. Clarkson also nearly doubled the Bears in groundballs (27-14) and won the battle on draws (15-9).

The Knights' Riley Donovan stopped two shots and did not allow a goal in the opening 30 minutes, while Jennaca McGill made two saves and allowed two scores in the second half. For Potsdam, Olivia Minarich had seven saves in the first half and Jane Olszewski recorded five saves in the second half.
