Burns Posts Career-High in Knights' One-Point Defeat in Season-Opener

Boston, MA - Senior Braeden Burns poured in 35 points, a career-high, in the season-opener for the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team, but the Golden Knights came up short in a one-point loss to Emmanuel College, 91-90, on Friday night.

The Golden Knights will take on Endicott College on Saturday evening to close out the tournament before returning for the home-opener when they face SUNY Canton on Tuesday.

Little went wrong for the Golden Knights in the first half of their first game in 2026-27, hitting 66.7% (16-for-24) of their shots and missing only once out of eight tries from beyond the 3-point arc. Meanwhile, Emmanuel struggled from distance, going only 1-for-12 beyond the line.

It took more than two minutes before Clarkson scored its first basket of the game, but from there the Knights were off to the races, pouring in 54 points in the first 20 minutes. Nate Abernethy, Matt Toscano, Jeff Dewar, and Braeden Burns each buried 3-pointers in a stretch of just over five minutes, helping Clarkson build a double-digit lead (20-9). The margin briefly went back to single digits, but two more 3-pointers from Tyson Maxam built the advantage to 15 and a few minutes later another 3-pointers from Steve DeRegis put the score at 33-12 with less than 10 minutes off the clock. Emmanuel responded with an 11-0 run, but the hosts could never get back to within single figures for the remainder of the half. Braeden Burns hit a layup at the buzzer to five Clarkson an 18-point advantage at the break, and giving the senior forward 21 points in the opening half.

For as hot as Clarkson was in the first half, the Saints nearly matched that effort in the early going of the second half. Emmanuel made eight of its first 10 shots in the second half, including a 3-for-3 effort from beyond the arc after its dismal start, to score 24 points in barely eight minutes and get back within four (64-60). The Golden Knights were able to halt the Saints' momentum for the next six minutes by maintaining a small lead, but eventually Emmanuel claimed its first lead since the opening points of the game when Noah Beaudet hit a 3-pointer at 5:52 immediately following a Clarkson turnover. Three minutes later, Clarkson tied the contest on a free throw and then regained the lead 30 seconds after that thanks to a Burns' layup. However, Noah Beaudet responded with a 3-pointer at the other end to return the advantage to the hosts. Free throws down the stretch allowed Emmanuel to hold the lead for the remainder of the game.

Burns shot 10-for-13 from the floor and 13-for-18 from the free throw line for his career-best 35 points. Senior guards Tyson Maxam, Steve DeRegis, and Matt Toscano each finished in double figures, Maxam tallying 14, DeRegis 13, and Toscano 10. DeRegis also led the team in rebounds (7) and assists (6). For Emmanuel, Mahari Guerrier scored 25 points and had 11 boards while Noah Beaudet added in 21 points. Both Cameron Snowden and Jack Assini tossed in 18 points for the Saints.
