DeRegis Pours in 26 in Knights Narrow Loss to #20 Endicott

Boston, MA – For most of the game, the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team hung with 20th-ranked Endicott, but eventually the Gulls were able to pull away down the stretch and send the Golden Knights to an 80-75 defeat on Saturday evening in the Emmanuel College Tournament.

The Green and Gold fell to 0-2 on the young campaign but will look to get on track when the team hosts SUNY Canton on Tuesday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

Endicott opened with an early rush and led for the first eight minutes of the contest, but Clarkson stuck with the Gulls thanks to some key stops and timely shooting, eventually taking a 20-18 lead on a Steve DeRegis 3-pointer at 11:10. Endicott reclaimed the lead and pushed the margin to as many as five, only to see the Knights score seven straight to gain the lead at 32-30. Each time that Clarkson took the lead, the Gulls had an answer and either tied the score or went back on top. Down by six late in the first half, the Knights got 3-pointers from Jeff Dewar and DeRegis to go into the locker room down by just one (43-42).

The two teams got there in different ways overall, but each team shot 16-for-29 in the first half and 8-for-14 from the 3-point line, with the only difference being one more made free throw by the Gulls in the first 20 minutes.

In the first half, Clarkson led for only 50 seconds in its three times ahead, but in the second half the Knights had considerably longer times with the lead, pushing their advantage to as many as six after a Dewar 3-pointer at 13:59 (59-53). Endicott responded with an 8-0 run to go back on top thanks to an Elijah Kinney jumper at 10:41 and after a brief tie the Gulls would hold the lead from 9:35 to the final buzzer. However, Clarkson continued to stick around despite falling behind by as many as eight with 3:30 to go, getting a timely 3-pointer from Nate Abernethy and a jumper from Jeff Dewar to pull back within one with 1:15 left. The margin was still just one after a pair of free throws from DeRegis 30 seconds later, but Endicott's Matt Boen made a jumper from the left elbow with 22 seconds to go to put the gap back to three. That proved the difference, as Clarkson had a miss and a turnover on its final two possessions.

Senior Steve DeRegis made six 3-pointers to score 26 points and lead the Golden Knights on Saturday. Dewar was 4-for-5 from beyond the arc and 5-for-6 overall for 14 points and Burns also tossed in 14 points. Abernethy recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

For Endicott, Elijah Kinney was 11-for-22 from the floor for a game-high 31 points, adding in nine rebounds and four assists. Caden Sullivan also scored 18 points for the Gulls.
