Knights Endure Second Half Delay in 5-0 Win Over SUNY Canton

Canton, NY - Both Jamie Dahlgard and Rachael Matthews played a part in three of the five goals scored by the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team as the Golden Knights claimed a 5-0 win over SUNY Canton in an abbreviated non-league matchup.

The Golden Knights improved to 6-4-1 on the year, while the Roos fell to 2-8-2. The game had a two-hour delay in the early part of the second half due to lightning in the area and then ended with a little over 10 minutes left in the contest when the lightning returned to the area.

It took very little time for the Knights to get on the scoreboard as the Green and Gold found the back of the net barely a minute into the contest. Ella Intrieri took the ball deep into the Canton corner and crossed it back into the middle of the field. Only a step or two right of the penalty stripe, Jamie Dahlgard gathered the pass on a short hop and immediately shot into the corner to make it 1-0 at 1:03.

Fifteen minutes later, the Knights scored twice in a stretch of less than two minutes. The first of the two came off a quick counter from a Canton goal kick as Jamie Dahlgard sent a through ball to Rachael Matthews. The junior then out ran three Canton defenders and went inside to the near post at 15:57. Matthews found the back of the net again at 17:47 when she was able to score off a header from Riley Irvin's corner kick.

Clarkson scored twice in the early going of the second half to build a 5-0 lead before a weather delay sent the teams to the locker rooms. Ella Intrieri scored her second goal of the season thanks to a hard sprint off a pass from Dahlgard at 48:50. Less than four minutes later, it was Matthews with a groundball cross from the top of the box on the right side to the far post, where Valentina Fasciano was able to finish off the play at 52:35 for a 5-0 Clarkson advantage.

With nine-plus minutes off the clock in the second half, lightning was detected in the area, creating the lengthy delay. When the two teams returned to the pitch around 10:30 pm, they played another 25 minutes, pushing the match past the necessary 70-minute mark.

Clarkson ended the game with a 17-3 edge in total shots and a 13-0 advantage in shots on goal. The Knights also posted four corner kicks to Canton's zero. Emma Fleming did not need to make any saves for the shutout while Nicole Morrow had eight stops for Canton.
