Clarkson Converts Late to Claim 1-0 Victory Over Bard

Annandale-on-Hudson, NY – Sophomore Kate Walsh ripped a shot from 22-yards out and into the opposite corner in the 86th minute to help lift the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team to a 1-0 Liberty League win over Bard College on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 7-4-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the Liberty League, while Bard remained winless in conference at 0-5-0 and fell to 3-7-1 on the season.

Clarkson had an overwhelming 26-8 advantage in shots, but the Raptors were able to frustrate the Golden Knights for much of the game, forcing shots from tough angles and from distances further than what they sought. The best scoring chance in the first half for the Knights was a shot by Madison Jakubek in the 34th minute, only to see Bard goalkeeper Thayden Hamilton-Howard dive at the post for a denial.

The Knights had a few chances in the second half as well, including a Kate Walsh shot from 10 yards out that was stopped by a diving hand from Julianna LaFond, the second half goalkeeper from the Raptors. Callie Abel's attempt from about 12 yards out when just wide right in the 72nd minute and Valentina Fasciano had everyone holding their breath when her shot in the 85th minute was also just beyond the post. Bard had a pair of chances back-to-back in the 76th minute, with Emma Fleming stopping the first with a dive and then hugging the post for another off the rebound.

Clarkson was able to get on the board with just over four minutes to go in the contest. Rachael Matthews did a solid job of keeping the ball in the Bard defensive end near the midfield and went back to the middle for Emily LeBlanc about 30 yards away from the net. LeBlanc played simply and sent a pass into space for Kate Walsh, where she then followed with a couple of strides to get closer and rifled a shot with her right foot into the top corner at 85:51, scoring the game-winner on the final shot of any kind in the contest.

The Knights ended with a 14-4 lead in shots on goal and had seven corner kicks to Bard's one. Emma Fleming made four saves to record the shutout for Clarkson. Hamilton-Howard had six saves in the first half and LaFond posted six saves in the second half.
