Knights Record Tie in First of Two Games Versus Niagara

Potsdam, NY – Hayden Reid scored with a little over three minutes to go to help the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team claim a 2-2 non-league tie against Niagara University on Friday evening at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights moved to 3-3-1 on the year and the Purple Eagles pushed their mark to 4-4-1. After a few scoreless tries on both sides during the shootout, Clarkson was able to close out the Purple Eagles 3-2 in the shootout with the last goal coming off the stick of Tate Taylor via backhand. The two teams will meet again on Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The first period was relatively quiet for both teams as only 13 combined shots made it through to the goalies. Clarkson had probably the two best scoring chances in the frame as Justin Cote hit a pipe about five minutes into the game and Hayden Reid had a good bid while on a 2-on-2 rush with a little over six minutes to go. Niagara had a power play opportunity late in the period, but the Purple Eagles had just one shot on goal in that two-minute stretch.

Niagara got on the scoreboard early on in the second period thanks to a funky bounce off a blocked shot. Theo Lemieux took a shot from the left point that either hit the leg pads of Sebastien Gervais of Clarkson or Hunter Wallace of Niagara. Regardless, Spencer Young was in perfect position off that deflection, ripping a shot in the slot past Ben Gaudreau at 3:46.

Clarkson tied the contest about 10 minutes ago, getting a goal shortly after a faceoff. It was a Niagara defensive zone draw at the left circle, won by Mael St.-Denis straight back to Axel Dufresne. Dufresne skated along the boards and waited for Justin Cote to fill in the lane, sending a pass into the slot for the sophomore where he ripped a one-timer to make it 1-1 at 13:48.

Niagara was whistled for a pair of penalties after Clarkson's goal, but the Purple Eagles killed off both penalties. They were able to repeat the effort after a hooking call in the third period as well, avoiding a go-ahead goal from the Knights despite skating down a player for six minutes in a stretch of just 12 minutes from the second to the third periods.

The Purple Eagles regained the lead a little after the halfway point of the third period when Maxim Muranov and Ryan Humphrey combined to create a turnover behind the back of the Clarkson net. The puck then found its way back to the top of the slot for a shot from Josh Van Mulligen. Skating back into the play after creating the give-away, Muranov was on the doorstep for a redirect, tipping one past Gaudreau at 11:15 in the third.

The Golden Knights tied the contest with time winding down late in the game. Initially a shot went wide of the net, but Clarkson was able to maintain possession as Tyler Wallace collected the puck in the right corner below the goal line. Wallace was able to flip the puck along the boards to Michael Craig at the blue line and he sent a rink wide pass to Axel Dufresne, who dropped a pass to Hayden Reid. Ripping a shot from the left point, Reid utilized some traffic in front to slip the puck past Tomas Anderson at 16:56.

Spencer Young was whistled for goaltender interference with 1:39 left in the game, giving Clarkson a chance to claim a win in regulation while on the power play. Clarkson did not have many scoring chances until the tail end of that power play as Tyler Wallace tried to find Reid crashing in front of the net, with Reid tip-toeing his way around Anderson to avoid a goaltender interference of his own. Bryce Sookro tried a chance from the right circle as well, but Niagara's defense held and the teams went to overtime.

Due to the overlapping penalty, Clarkson began the overtime skating 4-on-3 for 21 seconds, and when that time expired, the two teams went a lengthy period at 4-on-4 as no whistle came until there was two minutes remaining. The Knights had a few chances in the final minutes, including a shot denied with 4.4 seconds left, but the game closed officially in a tie.

Clarkson outshot Niagara 62-45 overall and 32-23 in shots on goal. Neither team scored on the power play, with Clarkson going 0-for-5 and the Purple Eagles scoreless in their two tries. Gaudreau stopped 21 shots and Anderson had 30 saves.
