Coming off an overtime victory over Vermont, the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team will look to build momentum when it hosts Niagara tonight at 7 p.m. at Cheel Arena.
The Golden Knights enter the non-conference matchup at 3-3-0 after splitting last weekend's home-and-home series with the Catamounts. Niagara arrives in Potsdam with a 4-4-0 record, setting up a weekend between two teams seeking to move above the .500 mark.
Clarkson closed its previous weekend in dramatic fashion, earning a 2-1 overtime victory Sunday at Cheel.
Talon Sigurdson delivered the deciding goal at 2:30 of the extra session, following his own shot and lifting a backhand into the net.
Ben Gaudreau, was named the MAC Goaltending ECAC Goalie of the Week for his effort in the OT win. The Clarkson goaltender recorded 29 saves to earn his first collegiate victory, including a crucial glove stop on a Vermont scoring chance in overtime.
Tyler Wallace supplied the Golden Knights' regulation goal as Clarkson rebounded from a 2-1 road loss Friday in Burlington.
Defensive play has been a strength for the Golden Knights in recent outings. Clarkson has allowed just three goals over its last three games, a stretch that began with a 5-0 victory over Canisius. Maintaining that defensive consistency while generating more offense will be a focus against the Purple Eagles. Niagara brings momentum of its own after defeating Union 5-4 in overtime last Saturday. The Purple Eagles split that series after dropping the opener 4-1, and they have won three of their last four games. That stretch also includes a road sweep at Bowling Green, where Niagara earned a 3-2 overtime victory followed by a 2-1 win.
The series also provides the Golden Knights with their final weekend of competition before opening ECAC Hockey play at home against Union and RPI on November 6-7.
Clarkson and Niagara conclude their series Saturday at 4 p.m. at Cheel Arena. Both games are scheduled to air on ESPN+ and 99.3 FM.
