Single Score in Second Half Lifts William Smith Past Clarkson, 1-0

Potsdam, NY – Just a single goal early in the second half proved to be the difference as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team came up just short in a 1-0 defeat against William Smith on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights slipped to 5-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the Liberty League, while the Herons pushed forward to 7-3-0 and 3-0-0 in conference. Clarkson plays its final non-league contest of the campaign on Tuesday when the team travels to SUNY Canton.

The first half was relatively quiet, as the two teams combined for just six shots, with only one on goal. A hard shot by Kristin Middaugh from about 15 yards out was stopped by Kenzie Roth in the 13th minute and was the only shot on goal in the half. However, both teams had scoring chances in the final 15 minutes of the half. The Golden Knights had a goal called off when it turned out that the player that headed the ball in was offsides at 31:56. A few minutes later, Miranda Demura's shot went just over the crossbar at 33:31, and Middaugh then hit the crossbar at 35:22 on a free kick from about 25 yards out.

Middaugh did find the back of the goal about 10 minutes into the second half. The ball bounced around on the far sideline and found the foot of Grace Metzler, who then sent a cross into the center of the field. There she found Middaugh with just one defender around and she was able to tap a shot past Kenzie Roth at 55:54.

William Smith had chances over the next 20 minutes, but all shots were off target or picked up by Roth. Clarkson made a late push with a pair of shots on the right side by Ella Intrieri, but her first was high and wide and her second hit off the side of the netting. In the final five minutes, Gabrielle Cyganik had the best chance of the game for the Knights as she got around the Herons' defense and inside the penalty area, but her shot was just wide of the frame after it got past Antonia Goerke at 85:27.

The Herons finished with a 13-4 edge in shots and a 4-0 lead in shots on goal. Clarkson had three corner kick chances to the Herons' one. Roth made three saves for the Knights and Goerke did not make any saves for William Smith.
