Potsdam, NY - An overtime score from Rhys Chiddenton put a damper on the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team's regular-season home-opener, as the Golden Knights suffered a 4-3 defeat against Canisius on Friday evening at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights fell to 1-2-0 on the season and Canisius improved to 3-1-1. The two teams will match up again on Saturday afternoon with the game set to begin at 4:30 pm.

Spectators had barely taken their seats before the first goal of the game was scored as Canisius quickly got on the scoreboard less than 30 seconds into the contest. A shot by Noah Quinn went wide and was recovered by Rhys Chiddenton along the wall in the left corner. He then delivered a pass to Noah Quinn behind the net. With Clarkson goaltender Ben Gaudreau expecting a wrap-around attempt, his gaze was on his left post, but instead Quinn delivered a quick pass to Hunter Price at the opposite circle, where he had plenty of time to rip a shot in for an early 1-0 lead for the visitors.

Clarkson responded barely two minutes later as Hayden Reid and Tyler Wallace worked a nifty give-and-go. Reid had the puck in the slot and dropped if off to Wallace in the right circle, allowing Reid to leak into open ice space, collecting a pass from Wallace right on the doorstep of the crease and make it 1-1 at the 2:48 mark.

The Knights took the lead less than 10 minutes later, capitalizing on a penalty to score on the power play. Wallace picked up his second point of the period, this time beginning the play and ending it with a score. He started the play from the goal line on the right side below the circle, sending a pass towards the blue line. The puck worked its way around to the opposite side of the ice above the left circle where Jared Mangan took a shot on goal. Having slipped through the back end of the Canisius defense, Wallace was there in front of the crease to tip in the shot and make it 2-1 Clarkson at the 12:11 mark.

The high octane first period concluded with a second goal from the Golden Griffins, knotting the game up just prior to intermission. Rhys Chiddenton skated from around the back of the net and had a little space at the bottom of the right circle, enough to take a shot on the Clarkson goal. Gaudreau made a save on the puck, but the rebound slid right to the stick of Noah Quinn, who knocked it in at 18:38.

The first seven minutes of the second period saw the Golden Knights show off their penalty killing units as the team was whistled for a pair of two-minute infractions. Despite being down a player, the first penalty kill appeared more like a 4-on-4 if not having the Knights up a skater, as Clarkson had the better of the scoring chances and possessed the puck for longer intervals than Canisius. The second looked more like a power play for the Golden Griffins, but the Green and Gold still displayed an excellent penalty kill, barely allowing any attempts towards the Clarkson crease. Neither team scored in the second period, and despite spending five minutes down a player due to three penalties, with the third overlapping into the final period of regulation, Clarkson outshot Canisius 12-8 in the frame in terms of shots on goal and 21-12 in total attempts.

The Knights were able to kill off the penalty that reached into the third period, but Canisius scored its third goal of the contest on a fluky bounce which was started by a strong defensive play. Both Gaudreau and a Clarkson defender tried to send backhands out of the zone, but the puck found its way to Carter Anderson along the boards and the bounding puck went off Anderson's stick and then ticked off Joey Henneberry's stick in front of the crease, slipping past Gaudreau thanks to a pair of funky bounces at 1:25.

Clarkson needed to kill off a fifth penalty near the midway point of the third, but saw things evened out when Canisius was whistled for a slash when Owen Van Steensel had a break in the Griffins' end while shorthanded, putting the teams on 4-on-4. While those penalties came to nothing, the Griffins were called for another on a trip with less than seven minutes remaining. Looking at possibly their last chance without emptying the crease for an extra attacker, Clarkson scored very late in its power play when Adrian Misaljevic took a shot from the top of the left circle and the rebound snuck out to Talon Sigurdson, who pushed it over the line at 15:15, and helped send the game to overtime.

Canisius was content to maintain possession for as much of the overtime stretch as it could, and that strategy worked out in fine fashion for the Griffins, when Chiddenton restarted his team's offense from his own zone, carrying the puck through the neutral zone and into Clarkson territory before firing a shot from the left circle that found enough daylight to get through Gaudreau less than two minutes into the extra session.

Clarkson ended the game with a 31-26 lead in shots on goal and a larger 61-39 advantage in total shots. The Knights went 2-for-3 on the power play and the Griffins were 0-for-5. Gaudreau had 22 saves for the Knights and Jack Lisson posted 28 saves for Canisius.
