Knights Tie Cornell in 5-5 Shootout

Ithaca, NY – An offensive heavy contest between two ranked teams needed overtime and then a shootout to decide which team would come out on top as the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team and Cornell University finished with a 5-5 tie Friday afternoon at Lynah Rink.

The Golden Knights moved to 13-6-3 overall and 6-2-2 in ECAC Hockey, while Cornell saw its record go to 10-6-2 and 6-4-1. Clarkson will visit Colgate on Saturday afternoon to finish off the weekend.

Both teams had their chances in the extra period as each had a stretch of skating 4-on-3 due to penalties, but the game had to be decided via shootout. It was Clarkson's second time in the shootout this year and the first for the Big Red. Cornell would come away with the shootout victory, 2-0, as Piper Grober and Avi Adam each connected to give the Big Red the extra notch in points for the ECAC Hockey standings.

The two teams traded goals in the early going of the first period with the Knights getting on the board first. Clarkson worked a 2-on-3 rush that had its two skaters with a half step on the Cornell defenders as Jenna Smellie came down the right side and flipped a pass over to Shelby Laidlaw right on the doorstep for a tip-in at 7:02. Cornell responded with a goal only 26 seconds later when Avi Adam was able to collect a loose puck behind the goal and then sneak it behind Holly Gruber at 7:28. McKenna Van Gelder had a decent look with her shot from the slot but the puck had gone wide, and before the defense could reset, Adam was able to tie the game 1-1.

Clarkson regained the lead eight minutes later when Sara Manness notched her 11th goal of the year. Manness and Manon le Scodan worked a give-and-go, as Manness came down the right side and passed the puck to the left circle for le Scodan. Once the defenders reacted and were drawn to that side, le Scodan passed the puck back to Manness for a wide open one-timer at 15:37.

Clarkson went into the first intermission with the lead despite a 23-9 deficit in total shots, though the Knights did only trail by one in shots on goal (8-7).

Cornell opened the second period with a goal about 90 seconds in. Delaney Fleming did a lot of the heavy lifting for the score, skating around the net and bringing defenders with her, but Fleming's shot was stopped by Holly Gruber. Once the puck fluttered back down to the ice, it landed at the feet of Alyssa Regalado, and she knocked it in at 1:33.

The Big Red gained their first lead of the game later on in the period thanks to a 3-on-2 rush. The puck came into the zone on the right side by Karel Prefontaine and she passed it ahead to Beatrice Perron-Roy. She took one touch and moved the puck to her forehand, slipping the puck past Gruber's glove at 14:15.

Much like the first period when Cornell responded to Clarkson's first goal, the Golden Knights did the same to tie the game for a third time. Shelby Laidlaw had a shot in close that was stopped by the left skate of Annelies Bergmann, but Clarkson never lost possession of the puck. Kate Manness gained possession and passed the puck back to Laidlaw near the left circle and Laidlaw used her vision to find le Scodan at the far post, where the first-year was able to quickly tally at 15:42, tying the contest at 3-3.

The Big Red utilized a power-play at the start of the third period to take another lead early on in the final frame. Cornell scored on a tic-tac-toe, using an extra pass in there as well. From the right point, Nora Curtis slid the puck to the top of slot for Regalado and she sent it to the bottom of the left circle for Adam. One more pass located Lindzi Avar in the center slot for a one-timer, and the Big Red scored at 0:58.

Cornell tallied another less than three minutes later for its first two-goal advantage of the night. A neutral zone possession transferred into a 3-on-3 the other way for the Big Red, with Mckenna Van Gelder locating Avi Adam in the slot for a one-timer at 3:26, making it 5-3.

Clarkson would trim the margin back to one when Cornell was whistled for its first penalty of the game, putting the Golden Knights on the power play midway through the third period. Clarkson never lost possession of the puck on the faceoff in the Cornell zone, working the puck around the perimeter of the zone before Keira Hurry whipped a wrist shot past Bergmann at 8:58 for a 5-4 score, as assists went to Kate Manness and Sara Manness.

The Knights tied the game thanks to another Cornell infraction and the Green and Gold improved to 2-for-2 on the power play with another strong effort while up a skater. Sara Manness took the first shot of the power play, but it was denied by Bergmann. Fortunately for Clarkson, the Knights never lost possession and were able to keep the puck in the zone when Kate Manness kept it inside the blue line on the right side. Shortly after, Sara Manness sent a pass through traffic from the top of the right circle down to the doorstep of the crease on the opposite post. Janelle Evans would not miss from such a short distance, tying the game 5-5 at 11:30.

Cornell had some chances in the final minute, but its best opportunities came in overtime since the team had 1:43 while on a 4-on-3 power play. Holly Gruber came up big on several occasions despite the extra space on the ice, making a key denial on a slap shot in the slot and then two more saves on her stick side. Clarkson had just as good of a chance when the penalty concluded, as Sara Manness was sprung from the bench for a breakaway only to see her chance denied by the pad of Bergmann. The Knights ended up a player with a late slash on the home team, but Clarkson was unable to get a goal on the 4-on-3 over the final 42 seconds, making the decision come via shootout.

Cornell finished with a 36-25 lead in shots on goal and went 1-for-3 on the power play while the Knights were 2-for-3 while up a skater. Gruber ended with 31 saves for the Knights and Bergmann had 20 saves for Cornell.
