Knights Unbeaten Streak Snapped at Six by Colgate, 5-2

Hamilton, NY – Scoring four unanswered goals over the final 23 minutes, including two on the power play and another as an empty netter, Colgate University ended the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team's six-game unbeaten streak with a 5-2 decision in ECAC Hockey action Saturday afternoon.

The 11th-ranked Golden Knights saw their mark fall to 13-7-3 overall and 6-3-2 in the ECAC, while Colgate, also in the top 15 nationally, moved to 12-10-1 and 7-4-1. Clarkson is back at home next weekend when the team hosts Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Friday and then Union College on Saturday at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights led 2-1 after a power play goal from Sena Catterall late in the second period, but Colgate responded with a goal on the power play with three minutes left in the frame to tie the game. That began a four-goal run by the Raiders that snapped Clarkson's most recent unbeaten run.

It took nearly eight minutes before Colgate registered a shot of any kind, as the Golden Knights came out of the gate firing on the Raiders defense and goaltender Brooke Davis. The start of a power play for Colgate quickly evened things up, with Holly Gruber making a couple of solid saves in the crease and sprawling for a cover-up to end the threat.  Despite each team having good scoring opportunities, it was a fluke play that resulted in the first goal of the contest. Chloe Goofers took a shot in the slot, but Sena Catterall laid down to block the shot. The rebound went back to Goofers who was again blocked by Catterall, only to see the puck start to go wide of the goal. Unfortunately for the Knights, the puck was redirected once more, this time bouncing off the back skate of a Clarkson defender and slipping inside the post to make it 1-0 at 17:32. Goofers was awarded the goal with assists going to Elyssa Biederman and Alexis Petford.

Clarkson closed out the first period on the power play and began the second with the player-advantage for nearly 1:50. It took more than 30 seconds for the Knights to get a zone entry, but once they did it quickly resulted in a goal. In the neutral zone, Sara Manness moved the puck forward to her sister Kate Manness and the Colgate defense started to go her way. That allowed Sara Manness to call for the puck unmarked on the other side of the ice, tapping her stick on the ice while she got into the zone. The puck was returned to her and she was able to score five-hole against Davis just 45 seconds into the period, knotting the game up 1-1.

A stretch of power plays began near the midway point of the frame as Clarkson was whistled for one and then Colgate was called for another a minute later for a brief 4-on-4. The Raiders were called for another just as their previous penalty kill ended, but none of Clarkson's shots were able to beat Davis.

That would change a few moments later when Colgate was called for another infraction, and the Knights took advantage just 19 seconds into the power play. Janelle Evans was able to dig the puck out of the left side boards and found Kate Manness at the opposite circle. Manness took a shot, but that attempt, like the first goal of the game for Colgate, was redirected by a skate, either bouncing off a Raiders' defender or Sena Catterall's blade, at 14:21.

Colgate recovered with a second goal about three minutes later, again taking advantage of some fortune. After making a save at the right post, Holly Gruber somehow was relieved of her stick and it ended up behind the net and out of her reach. Gruber made some saves with just her pads over the next 45 seconds, but eventually Colgate was able to sneak one through, tying the game 2-2 at 17:07.

The Raiders picked up key goals early on in the third period, one while even and the other on the power play. The first came when Elyssa Biederman took a shot that was denied by Holly Gruber, but the rebound bounced off Gruber's pads right to Biederman's stick and she was able to whip the puck in at 5:20. Just under three minutes later, Colgate scored its second power-play goal of the contest. The initial try ended up dinging off the right post for the Raiders and Sara Stewart was there to clean up that rebound, making it 4-2 at 8:18.

Clarkson pulled its goaltender with a little under three minutes to go following an icing call and Colgate for a little while was content to ice the puck to kill time off the clock. Eventually the Raiders picked up an empty netter with just a minute to go to wrap things up.

Clarkson finished with a narrow 54-52 lead in total shots but was up slightly more in shots on goal at 35-28. Both teams finished 2-for-5 on the power play and the Knights also led in faceoffs 42-27. Gruber ended up with 23 saves for Clarkson while Davis posted 33 saves for the Raiders.
