Knights Outlast Brown, 3-2, in Return to ECAC Play

Providence, RI – Showcasing the skill he had when he played for the opposition, Ryan Bottrill scored the first goal of the game and then assisted on another to help lead the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Brown University in ECAC Hockey action Friday evening.

The Golden Knights won their fifth straight game and a third straight conference game to improve to 10-11-0 overall and 4-5-0 in league contests, while Brown dipped to 3-13-0 and 2-7-0. Clarkson looks to keep its streak alive when it takes on Yale University on Saturday night in New Haven, CT.

Clarkson spent the last five minutes down a skater, two on a penalty and then three more while Brown had pulled its goalie, and the Golden Knights were able to stave off a strong third period by the Bears.

It was slow going to start in terms of shots for both teams as only a handful went on the cage. The best chances for each team came near the midway point of the period, and the opportunities were only separated by 10 seconds. Ivan Zadvernyuk was denied by Shane Soderwall as the puck just trickled to the side of the crease. Shortly thereafter, the puck was going the other way and a backhand shot from Bryce Sookro almost put Clarkson on the board, but he was stopped by Freddie Halyk as the Brown goalkeeper slid to his right to make the save. About four minutes later, Clarkson was on the power play and began to assert itself offensively, and the Knights started to pull away in terms of shots on goal. None of those found the back of the net, though, and the two teams were knotted up at 0-0 at the first intermission, despite Clarkson's 17-6 edge in shots on goal.

Justin Cote, who had the top scoring chance on Clarkson's power play in the first period, caused a second opportunity when he was taken down at the start of the second period. Once again, the Green and Gold were flying around the ice during the power play and had a number of shots towards the Brown goal, but the Bears were able to get in front of several of those chances and were equally adept at breaking up plays enough to keep the Knights off the scoreboard.

A third power play for the Knights finally hit pay dirt to put Clarkson up 1-0 at 7:09. The Green and Gold spent plenty of time trying to soften up the Brown defense and it was a one-timer from the high slot by former Brown player Ryan Bottrill that snuck through the Bears defense, with a little help from a screen provided by Talon Sigurdson. Assists went to Jared Mangan and Owen Van Steensel on the opening goal of the contest.

Clarkson picked up another goal on the power play just four minutes later. The puck worked around from Remi Gelinas at the right circle to Ty Brassington at the high slot and then over to the dot at the left circle, where Tate Taylor hit an absolute blast past Halyk for a 2-0 lead at 11:26.

Following a penalty kill, Clarkson notched its third goal of the period, as a seemingly harmless pass near the blue line into the center saw several Green and Gold clad skaters going down the ice at full steam. Bottrill and Brassington crossed over with plenty of speed and Bottrill flipped the puck to his left for Brassington, who then beat Halyk five-hole while in the middle of a slide to cover the post at 15:11. Along with Bottrill, Luka Sukovic was awarded an assist.

Brown came out of the second intermission with renewed effort, skating stronger than it had since the way back in first period. That effort quickly turned into a goal when the Bears created a quick 2-on-1 situation as Ryan St. Louis forced Soderwall to commit hard to his right to protect the post, and he was unable to return to cover the opposite post when the pass found Ben Poitras at 3:01. The Bears scored another goal just three minutes later, when a shot by Ethan Mistry was tipped in by Andrew King just outside of the crease, making it a one-goal game.

After the two goals, the game evened back up, but Brown kept pressing with some chances yet were unable to tie the game up. The Bears went on the power play with a little over five minutes to go, only to see Clarkson kill off the penalty. Shortly after the conclusion of the penalty, Brown pulled its goaltender with 3:08 remaining in hopes of utilizing an extra skater for a goal. The Knights defense stood strong and tried for a couple of chances at the empty net from more than 100 feet away. One attempt went over the crossbar and two more went just side of crease.

Clarkson finished with a 36-24 edge in shots, accomplished mostly through two lopsided periods before Brown had a 13-5 edge in the third period. Soderwall finished with 22 saves for the Knights and Halyk had 33 stops for Brown.
