Princeton Downs Knights 6-1 in Battle of ECAC Elite

Potsdam, NY – After scoring three times in the first period against Quinnipiac on Friday, the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team got a taste of its own medicine when Princeton did the same to the Golden Knights on Saturday, as the Tigers came away with a 6-1 win at Cheel Arena.

The matchup between two teams tied for first place in ECAC Hockey resulted in a change in the standings, as Princeton improved to 19-6-0 and 14-4-0 in conference games, pushing their point total to 41. Clarkson fell to 19-8-3 overall and 12-4-2, halting a six-game winning streak, and keeping its point total at 38. Clarkson has four home games remaining on the schedule, including two road games next weekend at Yale and Brown.

Princeton pounced on its opportunities when the Golden Knights made mistakes in the first period, scoring three times in the opening 20 minutes, including two goals while on the penalty kill. The Tigers' first goal came just two minutes into the contest when Riley Sorokan flipped in a backhand on the far side of the crease. The initial shot appeared to be covered up by Clarkson goaltender Aneta Senkova, but a player knocked the puck out of her glove before she could fall on it, and the loose puck went directly to the stick of Sorokan for the goal.

Clarkson had an opportunity to tie the game with a power play chance late in the first period, but two turnovers in the offensive zone allowed the Tigers to score two shorthanded goals. The first of those came by a tip off a pass from behind the net, which redirected the puck to create a rush in the other direction. From there, it was a strong skating effort from Angelina DiGirolamo, who put on the brakes near the top of the right circle and skated back around in the slot, finishing with a backhand over the glove side shoulder of Senkova. Only 32 seconds later Princeton scored another shorthanded marker, again off a turnover. An attempted pass from point-to-point was tipped by Mackenzie Alexander just enough to slow the pass down and Jane Kuehl collected the loose puck near the blue line for a breakaway attempt the other way. Kuehl finished off the play by going to her backhand and five-hole against Senkova.

The Knights continued to have some bad luck when Princeton picked up two more goals in the second period. The first of those came when Maggie Johnson took a shot from the left point, and the attempt appeared as if it would go very high, but it was redirected back down to the ice, perhaps by Brooklyn Nimegeers shoulder. Senkova never saw it and it crossed the line before she could even react to the change of direction. Princeton picked up an insurance goal four minutes later off a race from the opposite blue line involving Jane Kuehl. A quick pass from Katherine Khramtsov made in a 1-on-1 sprint of 100-plus feet, and Kuehl's stuff attempt at the crease caused Senkova to slide over the goal line with the puck at 14:03.

The Tigers tacked on another goal in the third right after the media timeout. Issy Wunder's first shot was denied by the relief goaltender Arianne Leblanc, but she picked up the rebound and went around the net. Mackenzie Alexander was camped out in the slot for a return pass, and she converted on the one-timer at 10:38.

Clarkson ended the shutout bid for Princeton when Sara Manness forced a turnover behind the Tigers' net and skated through the right circle and into the slot, wristing a shot through traffic and past Uma Corniea for the goal, extending her point-scoring streak to 12 straight games.

Clarkson won the battle of shots on goal (44-38) and neither team scored while on the power play, though Princeton did tally twice while shorthanded. Uma Corniea had 43 stops for the Tigers, while Senkova made 23 stops and Leblanc had 15 saves.
