Davenport, F.L.- A dominant offensive display throughout much of the game lifted the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team to a 17-5 victory over Berry College in the team's first of two games in Florida.
The Knights improve to 5-2 overall with the win being their fourth in a row. The team moves on to face Western Connecticut State on Monday as they wrap up their spring break trip in the south.
Connor Matthews got the Golden Knights on the board first just under five minutes into the game with an unassisted tally. Joe Kelly and Connor Holly would add the game's second and third at the 9:12 and 2:33 marks. After struggling to gain much of a footing in the game, Berry would finally manage a breakthrough with a bit more than a minute remaining as a shot from Finn McClendon wiggled through the Clarkson defense cutting the lead to 3-1 after the first quarter.
The second quarter was all Clarkson from the first faceoff. Robert Fox connected on a close range effort less than four minutes in to push the lead back to a three goal advantage. The rest of the four goals of the quarter were scored by the Golden Knights As Alex Seiler, Alex Alfieri, Ethan Hopkins and Sam Macabelli all registered one goal in the final eight minutes of the half to push the Clarkson advantage to 8-1 headed into the break.
Vincent Lavarnway opened the second half with a goal of his own a minute and a half into play to stretch the lead to 9-1. Berry would manage to gain some traction in the third, scoring two straight close-range efforts about five minutes apart, putting some pressure on the Knights moving into the last quarter of play.
Lavarnway would get the fourth underway with another early goal less than a minute in, assisted by Matthews before Berry managed a fourth about a minute and a half later. Another scoring run from the Knights saw them rattle off seven unanswered goals between the 12 and 4 minute mark to push the lead to 17-4. Hopkins, Joe Kelly, Andrew Kearney, Mario Strieff, Fox, Lavarnway and Matt Tully all added goals down the stretch for Clarkson. Berry would dump in a final consolation goal at the 4:16 mark, cutting the advantage down to 17-5 for the final.
Lavarnway led the way with three goals and an assist for the Knights while Fox, Hopkins and Kelly all added two of their own. Matt Szwagulinski helped anchor a stingy Clarkson defense with three caused turnovers and four ground balls while Jack Garvey caused three turnovers as well to go along with two ground balls.
