Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Knights See Regular Season End on 4-3 Overtime Loss to Princeton, Finish as ECAC #2 Seed

Potsdam, NY – For the first time since the last day of January, the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team dropped a contest in ECAC Hockey play, falling 4-3 in overtime to Princeton University in the regular-season finale on Saturday night at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end, falling to 21-10-3 overall and 15-6-1 in ECAC action, while Princeton moved to 12-14-3 and 7-12-3 in league play. Entering the postseason ECAC Tournament as the second seed, the Golden Knights have next weekend off and will be back in action on March 14-16 in a best-of-three ECAC Quarterfinals series.

For a second straight night, not many shots went on the goal for the Green and Gold as the Knights had 11 total shots but only two made it through to challenge Princeton netminder Ethan Pearson. The Tigers weren't exactly whistling shots in the other direction either, but they got a fortunate bounce about 15 minutes into the frame. After a shot denied by Ethan Langenegger and cleared out of the crease by Trey Taylor, Princeton's Jake Manfre picked up possession on the left side boards. Manfre skated around back to the top of the left circle and near the slot, deciding to toss one on goal. His attempt was just a medium-paced wrist shot, but it was partially blocked by Talon Sigurdson, which gave the puck just enough of a bounce to jump over Langenegger's right pad and in at 14:57.

At the start of the second period, the Golden Knights found themselves on a power play, and the Knights would convert while up the extra skater. Ellis Rickwood won the faceoff from the right circle and dropped it back for Ayrton Martino at the top of the slot. Martino put a shot on net that was denied, but the rebound found the stick of Rickwood for a backhand. Though that attempt, too, was stopped, Rickwood stuck with the play and rattled a third shot off the bottom of the crossbar to tie the game at 1:02 in the second period.

After scoreless skating for the next 17 minutes, it looked like the two teams would head to the third period knotted up at 1-1, but Princeton broke things open with a pair of goals in the final two minutes of the second period. Miles Gunty held the puck near the Clarkson blue line to gain entry into the zone, but needed no help after that, weaving through several Clarkson defenders and getting in close against Langenegger where he was able to finish off the play. Though there was a challenge for offsides, the goal was ruled good, giving the Tigers some momentum. Princeton utilized that just 90 seconds later on the power play, scoring only 17 seconds into extra skater stretch as Nick Marciano's shot from the left circle had a similar bounce as the Tigers' first goal, again going off the leg of a Clarkson defender and around Langenegger at 19:36, making it 3-1.

The Golden Knights did not enter the third period with their heads hung low, but in fact scored less than 90 seconds in to tighten up the contest. The puck was carried deep into Princeton territory, but a few Clarkson skaters were upended without possession. However, on the attempted clear from the Tigers, the puck ticked off Talon Sigurdson and another Princeton player before finding its way to the stick of Ray Fust in the slot. He allowed one Princeton player to drop and slide in an attempt to block the shot, but that just cleared out the potential defender as Fust's patience paid off with a wrist shot at 1:22.

Eight minutes later the Knights tied up the game for a second time with less than 20 seconds to go on the power play. Luka Sukovic won the faceoff from the right circle and Ryan Bottrill came away with the puck, quickly finding Martino at the top of the circle to start the power play set. However, one quick pass to the top of the left circle set up a one-timer for Tristan Sarsland, and the game was drawn equal at 9:16.

The two teams skated 4-on-4 for two minutes very late in the game, but when the Tigers went back on the power play late, Brady Parker was able to stone a breakaway attempt from Luc Pelletier with only 20 seconds to go. However, the power play extended into overtime for the Tigers, and while on the 4-on-3, Princeton picked up the game-winner. Nick Marciano utilized a screen at the top of the crease with a wrist shot from the slot 37 seconds into the extra session.

Clarkson ended the game with a 28-20 advantage in shots on goal and a 52-41 lead in total shots. Each team scored twice on the power play, the Knights doing so in three tries and the Tigers scoring in their five attempts. Ethan Langenegger made 10 saves in the first two periods and Brady Parker stopped six shots in the third and overtime. Ethan Person had 25 saves for the Tigers.
