Bottrill's Overtime Game-Winner Lifts Knights Past Quinnipiac

Bottrill Scores vs Qpac

Men's Hockey | 2/28/2025 10:09:00 PM

Box Score
Potsdam, NY – Senior Ayrton Martino scored twice and assisted on another, his fifth consecutive multi-point game, and Ryan Bottrill scored in the final seconds of overtime to help lift the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team to a 4-3 victory over Quinnipiac Friday night at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights, ranked 19th in the latest national poll, improved to 21-9-3 overall and 15-5-1 in ECAC Hockey, while 13th ranked Quinnipiac fell to 21-19-2 and 15-5-1 in league play. Clarkson closes out the regular season when it hosts Princeton on Saturday evening.

Post Game with Coach Houle

The extra session was relatively quiet as Quinnipiac seemed content to hold possession and tire out the Knights skaters instead of taking too many chances, but the action picked up in the final two minutes, culminating in the game-winning goal. After a collision in the Knights' defensive end, the puck was on the left side boards for Ryan Bottrill. He eluded one Quinnipiac defender and an official to maintain possession and another Bobcats' defender fell to allow Bottrill to come in alone for a 1-on-1 with the goalie, and the junior won the battle by using his backhand shot just in front of the crease to score the game-winner with under 10 seconds to go in overtime.

Post Game with Ayrton Martino

The first period was played at a fast pace, but both teams were quick on checks as well for a very strongly defended opening 20 minutes with each team mustering just five shots on goal. Each squad had chances on the power play but none came to fruition as again the defenses were up to the task in blocking shots.

Post Game with Ryan Bottrill

It appeared as if the two programs would enter the first intermission without a goal, but that changed quickly in the final minute. Ryan Richardson held the puck in the right side corner before it trickled out below the goal line to Tristan Sarsland. Sarsland then took a few strides to change the look before flipping the puck out in front to senior Ayrton Martino, who finished off the play as he has done so many times in 2024-25, pushing the puck in at 19:04 for his league-best 22nd score of the year.

The second period saw little change in pace or results, as shots on goal remained relatively absent from the scoresheet. Each team killed off penalties once again, though after a second scoreless stretch on the power play by the Bobcats, Quinnipiac nearly got on the board. Elliott Groenewold took a shot in the slot that was stopped by Clarkson's Ethan Langenegger. However, the puck trickled over the top of Langenegger's shoulder and looked like it might bounce into the goal. Carter Rose was there to pick up his goaltender, though, clearing the puck out of the crease and ending the scoring chance when multiple players crashed into the net and knocked it off its moorings with roughly five minutes to go in the period.

For the second time in as many periods, it was Ayrton Martino that found the back of the net in the final minute giving the Knights a 2-0 lead into the second intermission. With under 30 seconds to go, it was Trey Taylor who kept the puck in the zone at the Quinnipiac blue line and sent the puck back down to the corner. Ryan Richardson eventually got possession and poked a pass out to Martino at the bottom of the right circle, and Martino passed the puck over to Taylor in the slot. Quinnipiac goalie Dylan Silverstein came out to the top of the crease to cut down the angle, which proved costly when Taylor chose not to shoot, passing the puck right back to Martino, who one-timed it into the open net despite a tougher angle with only 15.4 seconds remaining in the frame.

Quinnipiac cut the margin in half about five minutes into the third period, picking up possession in the Bobcats defensive end with Chris Pelosi carrying the puck in but getting knocked off the play initially as the puck settled behind the goal line. However, Pelosi followed up his play and caused a turnover behind the net, sending the puck back in front to Jack Ricketts for a quick one-timer at 5:01. Clarkson attempted to get the goal knocked off the scoreboard with a review for a penalty, but the play stuck, which turned out to be a key call. Clarkson was whistled for a penalty and Quinnipiac capitalized in the second minute of the power play when Andon Cerbone's wrister from the slot found the back of the net at 7:14, tying the contest between the ECAC's top two teams.

Instead of being on their heels with a shift of momentum, the Golden Knights regained the lead in the final seconds of a power play. From the left circle, Ellis Rickwood won the faceoff with eight seconds to go and knocked the puck back to Martino, who quickly sent a pass over to Trey Taylor at the top of the right circle and his one-timer beat Silverstein at 10:54 of the third.

With 3:43 remaining, the Bobcats pulled their netminder for an extra attacker, perhaps taking advantage of Clarkson being without its timeout after the failed challenge a dozen minutes earlier. The tactic worked out in Quinnipiac's favor as Travis Treloar somehow snuck a shot past Langenegger at 18:15, throwing a shot on the net from just in front of the goal line at the bottom of the left circle.

Quinnipiac finished with a 26-12 advantage in shots on goal and a 63-43 lead in shots overall, while each team scored once in four chances on the power play. Langenegger ended the contest with 23 saves and Silverstein recorded eight saves for the Quinnipiac.
