Knights First-Years Shine in Win Over Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – Hitting a season-best .337 as a team, the Clarkson University Volleyball team closed out its regular-season with a three-set sweep of SUNY Potsdam on Thursday evening, beating the Bears 25-15, 25-13, 25-17.

The Golden Knights evened their record at 13-13 overall while Potsdam fell to 8-17. Clarkson continues its season next Tuesday in the Liberty League First Round against William Smith College.

The first-year collegians led the way for the Golden Knights on Thursday, as freshman Natasha Aguirre recorded 34 assists and four aces, classmate Conley Burns hit .538 with 16 kills, and Jordyn Leader hit .615 (8-0-13).

Clarkson took control in the first set with a run of five straight points, including two kills apiece from Leader and Burns, to make the score 7-3. The Knights never led by fewer than three points after that early roll, picking up key points whenever it was necessary to hold the Bears at a safe distance.

The second set played out in a similar fashion, as Clarkson again scored four straight points for an early 7-3 advantage. This time the Knights put Potsdam away quickly, giving up one point to briefly halt the early streak, but beginning a new one immediately after, knocking down six straight for a 13-4 advantage. It wasn't just the Clarkson offense that was humming along, but the Knights were providing tough defense as well, limiting Potsdam to an 8-9-30 attack line in the second game.

Clarkson was not quite as dominant in the third set, hitting .270 (13-3-37) in comparison to .364 in the first game and .387 in the second. That was enough to keep Potsdam in the contest, allowing the Bears to gain an early 9-5 advantage. However, the Knights recovered with six straight to take the lead. In fact, after Potsdam won 9 of the first 14 points, it was Clarkson that would close out the contest with 20 of the final 28 points. Specifically, Clarkson tallied eight of the final 10, ending the match emphatically with a kill from Burns.

Outside of the freshmen, Clarkson had another standouts in the way of Ainslie Reimer (7 kills, 4 blocks) and Marin Hangliter (6 kills, 14 digs). For Potsdam, Ashlee Hagerman notched 11 kills and nine digs, Sophia Layer recorded 21 assists, and Rachel Madore picked up 15 digs.
