Herons Close Out Clarkson's 2025 Season with First Round Liberty League Sweep

Geneva, NY – A relentless offense by the opposition kept the Clarkson University Volleyball team from putting together lengthy runs of its own as the Golden Knights suffered a season-ending defeat in straight sets to William Smith (25-13, 25-22, 25-11) in the Liberty League First Round on Tuesday evening.

The Golden Knights, seeded sixth in the postseason conference tournament, finished the 2025 campaign with a record of 13-14 overall. William Smith moves on to the conference semifinals this weekend, improving to 22-6.

In the first set, the Knights were playing even with the Herons at 6-6, but William Smith rattled off seven straight and scored 15 of 16 points overall to triple up Clarkson late in the opening game. The first run came with back-to-back aces from Malya Sayre and then a third ace from her that made it 13-6. After a one-point stoppage to the streak, the Herons scored eight more in a row, capped by a kill from Emily Fulton. Though Clarkson was able to shake off the roll by William Smith, it was too much to overcome. That first set saw the Knights hit -.071 (6-8-28) with five of the errors coming off blocks from the Herons.

Clarkson began the second set with four straight points, including two aces from Marin Hangliter, though the two teams would jostle back and forth for much of the set. William Smith briefly took the lead at 9-7, only to see Clarkson come back and tie it at 11-11, again thanks to an ace from Hangliter. The key to the win in the second game for the Herons was a streak in the middle of the set, as William Smith came out of that tie with a 7-2 run, pushing its advantage to 18-13 following a kill from Hope Von Dohlen. Clarkson would not go away, eventually climbing back within two (21-19) with a three-point run. The Herons responded with three in a row of their own and had several set points, eventually ending it at 25-22 on a kill from Jaylynn McCarthy.

William Smith left no doubt of a sweep in the third set as its offense hummed along throughout, scoring 20 kills against just one error on 36 swings for a team hitting percentage of .528. Clarkson dotted points around the successful attacks of the Herons, but two 4-0 runs in a short stretch pushed the margin from six to 12, and the Knights were simply unable to recover.

Conley Burns dropped in nine kills to lead the Knights, while Marin Hangliter added six kills and four aces. Ashley Currier posted 14 assists and Izzie Piano and Olivia Baxter each added seven digs.

For William Smith, Hope Von Dohlen hit .692 (10-1-13) and Emily Fulton hit .476 (11-1-21), just short of the team-best 12 kills from Malya Sayre, who also had 12 digs. Delainy Williams notched 40 assists, and Kali Vanderhoof and Fulton also notched nine digs. Arielle Newsome also had six block assists.
