Big Second and Third Periods Send Ohio State Past Knights in DC Tourney

Arlington, VA – Following a scoreless first period, second-ranked Ohio State took advantage of several penalties called upon the 10th-rated Clarkson University Women's Hockey team, as the Buckeyes claimed an 8-0 win on Friday in the D1 in DC tournament at the Medstar Capitals Iceplex.

The Golden Knights dropped to 9-6-1 on the season while Ohio State pushed its mark to 14-1-0. Clarkson takes on St. Cloud State on Saturday afternoon.

Although the first 10 minutes saw the ice tilted in favor of the Buckeyes, the closest either team came to a goal was a few minutes into the game when Manon le Scordan's shot hit off the post. While Ohio State had numerous shots on goal in the first period, Clarkson did an excellent job of jumping on rebounds and pushing the puck out of harm's way, limiting the Buckeyes' second chance opportunities. Ohio State did finish with a 16-2 edge in shots as both teams went 0-for-1 on the power play.

The Buckeyes would get on the scoreboard at the start of the second thanks to the power play, breaking the scoreless tie two minutes into the middle period. On the re-entry to the Clarkson defensive zone, Joy Dunne was sent a quick pass and she skated down low and started edging towards the right post. Holly Gruber had no choice but to protect that spot, allowing Dunne to send a pass to the opposite circle where Kassidy Carmichael was waiting for a one-timer, making it 1-0 at 2:12.

About eight minutes later, the Buckeyes used the same tactic, though this time the two teams were playing at even strength. Sara Swiderski carried the puck in down the left side and behind the net, flipping the puck out in front for Macy Rasmussen, who was waiting just outside the crease in the center slot. Less than a minute later, the Buckeyes continued to find success on offense with another tip in close to the Clarkson crease. Sara Swiderski was on the right side and shoveled the puck back into the middle for two potential teammates, but it was Hilda Svensson that would get the goal, utilizing the traffic of another Ohio State player and Clarkson defender near the crease.

The Knights were looking to escape the third period with a score of their own and possibly take some momentum into the third period, but instead the team found itself on the penalty kill in the final two minutes. Clarkson packed the crease and allowed Ohio State to pass the puck around the blue line, but eventually the Buckeyes found a soft spot near the bottom of the right circle when Mira Jungaker found Joy Dunne, and she eluded the defense to score right in front of the crease at 18:42.

Ohio State continued to take advantage of Clarkson penalties, scoring a third power play goal early on in the final period. Sanni Vanhanen tapped in a rebound off a pad shot from Emma Peschel at 6:32. The Buckeyes scored a pair of goals just 36 seconds apart near the midway point of the frame when Kassidy Carmichael and Hilda Svensson found the back of the net in quick succession, and Svensson added one more in the final minute of the contest to complete her hat trick.

Holly Gruber finished with 37 saves for the Knights before being relieved by Arianne Leblanc, who closed out the game with eight saves in the final 10 minutes. Ohio State's Hailey MacLeod made nine stops for the Buckeyes. Clarkson was 0-for-3 on the power play and Ohio State was 3-for-5.
