Beecher's Third Period Score Lifts Knights Over Yale, 3-2

Potsdam, NY – Holly Gruber stopped 36 shots overall and was helped out by a third-period goal from Lara Beecher as the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team finished off a home sweep over the weekend, downing Yale University 3-2 in ECAC Hockey action Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights, ranked 11th in the most recent national poll, improved to 9-5-1 on the year and 5-2-1 in ECAC Hockey contests, while Yale, rated 14th in the last poll, fell to 7-4-0 and 4-4-0 in league games. Clarkson will be in the District of Columbia next weekend, taking on Ohio State on Friday and St. Cloud State on Saturday.

There were plenty of scoring opportunities for both teams in the first period, as the teams combined for 28 shots on goal with the majority of attempts staying on target instead of going wide. In fact, the very first shot of the game for either team found the back of the net, barely a minute into the contest. Sara Manness carried the puck into the offensive zone and pushed the puck forward for Manon le Scodan. She then went below the goal line and used some vision to see her teammate in front, sending a backhand pass into the slot for Janelle Evans, who finished off the play on the glove side of Yale goaltender Anna Phillips at 1:02.

Yale recovered with a goal about seven minutes later and then took the lead in the final moments of the opening period. The Bulldogs got their first goal at 8:35 thanks to a strong stretch in the Clarkson defensive zone, putting four shots on goal in less than 30 seconds. The fourth of those attempts came in a three-shot flurry, with Sophia Levering's first attempt from the point getting it close and then Cami Bell stuffing in her own rebound to make it 1-1.

Ten minutes later, the Bulldogs took the lead with a transition out of their own end, creating a 2-on-2. It eventually turned into a 3-on-3, but that was due to a pass finding an unintended mark. Carina DiAntonio was on the left hand side and attempted to pass through the slot to Avery Chesek, but a Clarkson defender was able to deflect the puck away. Unfortunately for the Knights, it ended up on the stick of a trailing skater, as Molly Boyle was the recipient of the redirected puck, flipping her shot under the crossbar at 18:35.

Yale controlled the second period in terms of shots (25-12) and shots on goal (13-4), but it was Clarkson that was able to come away with a score and even up the contest at 2-2. Midway through the period, the Knights had the puck in their offensive zone when it was poked away from Sara Manness. The freshman collected the puck behind the net and then began a square of passing, going around the end line to le Scodan, back to the right point for Morgan Walton, and then over to Keira Hurry at the left point. Hurry took a shot from between the left circle and the blue line, utilizing a screen by Manness in front, and the puck found a soft spot in the defense at 12:35, Hurry's fourth goal of the year.

It wasn't until the third period that either team was whistled for a penalty, with the Bulldogs going on the power play early on in the frame. Yale nearly regained the lead following a Holly Gruber save when the rebound went to a Yale stick but the next attempt slid behind Gruber in the crease and over to the right side boards. That was Yale's best chance by a wide margin as the teams remained tied.

When Yale came up empty after the power play, the Knights used the small shift in momentum to take the lead for the first time since early in the opening period. The Bulldogs turned the puck over in the Clarkson defensive zone and Sena Catterall backhanded the puck beyond the blue line and through most of the neutral zone, finding Lara Beecher for a 1-on-1 at the opposite end of the ice. Beecher went along the right side, dragging the puck to delay her shot, and eventually wristed a shot over the right shoulder of Phillips to make the score 3-1 at 7:42 in the third.

Yale pulled its goaltender with about three minutes to play in an attempt to knot the game up one more time, but three shots went wide, two were blocked before they challenged Holly Gruber, and one save was made by Gruber with roughly 90 seconds to go, as the Knights survived the late flurry of attempts from the Bulldogs.

Yale finished with a 38-22 lead in shots on goal, giving Gruber 36 saves for the Knights and Phillips 19 saves for the Bulldogs. There was only one power play in the contest, with Yale coming up empty in that two-minute stretch.
