Third Period Goals Send Knights to Loss Against 19th-Ranked Dartmouth, 3-1

Potsdam, NY – Plenty of shots were put on goal in the third period by the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team, but none of them eluded the defense of Dartmouth College, as the Golden Knights fell to the 19th-ranked Big Green 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights dipped to 4-8-0 on the year and 1-3-0 in ECAC play while the Big Green remained unbeaten at 6-0-0 and 4-0-0 during league play. Clarkson hits the road next weekend, facing Quinnipiac on Friday and then Princeton on Saturday.

In a defensive-minded contest, Clarkson took 16 of hits 28 shots on goal in the third period, which included more than five minutes of skating with an extra attacker due to a power play and an empty net, but the Knights were unable to solve Dartmouth goaltender Emmett Croteau in the last frame.

The two teams were feeling one another out in the opening period as there weren't many shots that made it on to the cage. The closest that a shot came to breaking through was a Jack Sparkes wrist shot that clanged off the left post for the Knights. Clarkson also had a later flurry of attempts that came up empty as Emmett Croteau was able to slide over and make a stop with his left leg pad. The two teams combined for 32 total shot attempts, but only 10 made it to the goaltender in the first 20 minutes.

The second period was played similarly to the first, but a fortunate bounce turned into a goal for Dartmouth near the midway points of the stanza. Andrew Clarke picked up possession beneath the left circle and skated behind the net to work, eventually finding a teammate in front. On the pass, the puck bounced off the skate of a Clarkson defender, but did not kick too far away, allowing Jack Silverburg to step into the free space and take a wrist shot that beat Shane Soderwall at 7:20.

Clarkson evened the game up at 1-1 about five minutes later, creating a 3-on-2 in transition following a Dartmouth scoring chance. The Knights skated up ice on the left side and just before the blue line in the neutral zone, Ryan Bottrill left his spot in the middle of the 3-on-2 as the chance morphed into a 4-on-3 with Jared Mangan joining the play. Mangan took possession and found Bottrill near the bottom of the right circle for a quick shot and goal at 12:55.

Dartmouth jumped back on top midway through the second period. The play began when Clarkson was whistled for an intentional offside, forcing a faceoff in the Knights' defensive zone. The Big Green won the ensuring faceoff and took the puck below the goal line, with a pass finding Nathan Morin for a shot below the left dot, as Morin went to the far post with a one-timer at 8:05, making it 2-1.

The Big Green picked up an insurance goal roughly three minutes later, again scoring off a pass from behind the net. Cam MacDonald picked up a loose puck behind the net when a Clarkson pass didn't quite have enough velocity to get to its intended target, and he quickly took advantage, centering a pass to the bottom of the left circle yet again, as Hayden Stavroff buried a quick shot at 11:19.

Clarkson had a chance shortly after the goal when Stavroff was whistled for tripping, putting the Knights on the power play, but the team came up empty during its extra-attacker run. Shortly after the conclusion of the power play, the Knights took advantage of an icing call on Dartmouth, pulling Soderwall out of the crease with a little over three minutes to go. Clarkson took plenty of shots on the Dartmouth goal, holding the puck for over a minute in the zone on the 6-on-5. Emmett Croteau was peppered for much of the last three minutes, making six saves against the Knights as Dartmouth held on for the win.

Clarkson finished with a 28-23 edge in shots on goal and a 49-43 lead in total shots attempted. Both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play. Shane Soderwall continued to play well in the Clarkson crease, stopping 20 shots, while Emmett Croteau made 27 saves for Dartmouth.
