Late Goal Stops Knights From Earning Point on the Road

Troy, NY – A late goal on a quick restart off a throw-in proved to be the difference as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team suffered a 2-1 Liberty League defeat at Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 3-7-3 overall and 1-5-1 in the Liberty League, while RPI moved to 5-5-3 and 1-2-2 in conference games. Clarkson is at home for its final home game of 2025 next weekend against Ithaca College.

Neither team registered a shot on frame until the 26th minute, and though that shot never truly came close to the goal, it was nevertheless a very dangerous play that kept the game tied at 0-0. Sarah Sedlacek was able to break free with open ground in front of her on the right side. Clarkson goalkeeper Isabelle Wood raced out to a cut down the angle near the top of the box and Sedlacek's shot was deflected by Wood's arm, but trickled towards the goal. Fortunately for Clarkson, Julia Tylar won the face to the ball near the top of the six and launched the ball out of bounds along the sideline to end the threat.

About 10 minutes later, Clarkson scored off a restart in its own end. Julia Tylar launched a long pass off a goal kick into the midfield where the ball worked forward along the left sideline. Gabrielle Cyganik was able to side step an RPII defender and closed ground near the side of the penalty area before centering a pass near the top of the six. With a defender near and the goalie closing, Paige Ford wisely tapped the pass with her heel towards the far post and Brooke Everest was there to just slide in and tap the ball into the open net at 34:58.

RPI appeared to have tied the contest only 35 seconds later, but the Engineers were just offside to keep the game 1-0 into the break.

Seven minutes into the second half, the Knights played with a bit of fire, as the ball was headed around in the midfield and the team unable to clear the ball forward. Eventually the bounding ball was settled and went to the left side for Isabelle Gelzhiser. In a play that mirrored Clarkson's first-half goal, Gelzhiser pushed a centering pass near the top of the six where Rachel Borra just missed her touch. That was beneficial for the RPI, as Wood collapsed on the play near Borra, but left Maddy Kaminski open a few yards away, and Kaminski knocked the ball into the vacated space at 52:13.

The Engineers had a few close chances in the final 15 minutes, and finally found the back of the net with about five minutes to go. RPI had a few throw-ins along the left sideline, with the second seeing Genevieve Ricci wide open and ahead of the Clarkson defenders near her. She was able to race through empty space and was able to muscle through a slide tackle attempt before hitting a shot with her right foot towards the far post to give the Engineers a 2-1 lead in the 86th minute.

Clarkson had some chances in the final five minutes, but Paige Ford's header was snagged by Audrey Montero in the 87th minute and Lillian Gillett's shot from outside the area was smothered in the 89th minute.

Clarkson led in shots (10-9), shots on goal (6-4), and corner kick chances (5-2). Isabelle Wood had two saves for the Knights and Audrey Montero posted four saves for RPI.
