Potsdam, N.Y. - A goal deficit at halftime proved to be too much for the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team as the team dropped a Liberty League decision to Ithaca College 2-1.
With the result the team drops to 3-8-3 overall, 1-6-1 in conference play. The team wraps up league action next Saturday, travelling to Vassar College for a 2 p.m. start.
Following some early pressure, Ithaca would get on the scoreboard 14 minutes in off of a long throw-in from the right wing. The throw would be partially cleared in the middle of the box by a Clarkson defender but dropped to the feet of Ava Detorie who smashed the ball on the half-volley and into the back of the net for 1-0.
Less than 10 minutes later, early in the 23rd minute, the Bombers added a second with some sharp wing play. Kaelyn Fernandez released Lilyana Baldi down the right wing with a one time ball out of midfield. Baldi would get on the end of the pass and slide a low cross through the 18 yard box right to Detorie who tucked a shot away for her second of the game.
Determined to cut into the lead before halftime, Julia Tylar provided that solution for the Knights in the 38th minute. Standing alone over a free kick 25 yards out, the senior connected on a right footed bullet that flew over the Bomber wall and into the top right corner of the goal to halve the deficit.
As the second half progressed Ithaca produced the better of the chances with two breakaway opportunities in the 59th and 68th minute. Both attempts saw attackers driving in from the left wing ahead of the defense into the Clarkson penalty area. Kenzie Roth would stand tall in net for Clarkson on both chances, closing the shooting angles and keeping the Knights within striking distance.
On the other end, the Clarkson offense would struggle to create a clear-cut opportunity through the final portion of the contest with the best chance coming in the final two minutes of the game. A fizzed ball across the face of goal from the right wing just couldn't find a white jersey and the Ithaca defense would clear to keep the advantage intact.
Roth would make three saves in net for Clarkson while Katrina Varnum made three of her own for the Bombers. Ithaca held an advantage in shots (11-7) and shots on goal (5-4). Tylar and Emily LeBlanc both produced two shots for the Knights as Avianna Johnson, Paige Ford and Jamie Dahlgard all contributed one apiece.
