Knights Hold On For 12-10 Victory Against St. John Fisher

Potsdam, NY – Alex Seiler and Matt Reilly opened the third quarter with a combined three goals to give the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team a quick boost out of the break and the Golden Knights never relinquished the lead again in a 12-10 victory over St. John Fisher Wednesday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 6-5 overall while St. John Fisher dipped below .500 at 5-6. Clarkson has five games remaining in the regular-season schedule, all Liberty League contests.

Things started off slow for the Knights as St. John Fisher scored three goals in the first 10-plus minutes against Clarkson's one. However, an Andrew Kearney goal off a rebound in front as time expired in the first quarter gave Clarkson a lift to make it 3-2 through the first 15 minutes. The second quarter was relatively quiet, with just three combined goals, and the game was tied at the break.

Starting the second half, Alex Seiler scored at 11:21 and Matt Reilly scored twice in the next few minutes to give the Knights a three-goal lead. Clarkson would hold at least a two-goal advantage for the rest of the quarter and advanced that lead to as many as four at the start of the fourth quarter when Kearney and Reilly connected at 14:09.

From there, the Cardinals chipped away, scoring three straight goals to put a scare into the Golden Knights. Clarkson then used some patient offense to let time tick away on the clock. Following a St. John Fisher turnover near the three-minute mark, Clarkson let a full minute fall off the game clock before Matt Reilly rushed to the net for a goal at 2:02. Once Eric Gellasch stopped a St. John Fisher shot in front with under two minutes remaining, the Knights again rolled time off the clock, and near the end of the shot clock Vincent Lavarnway found Reilly in front to return the margin to three goals in the final minute.

Reilly finished with seven points on six goals and an assist, Andrew Kearney scored three goals and Vincent Lavarnway chipped in two assists. Logan Wilkinson had four groundballs and both Joe Porto and Tyler Griffin caused two turnovers.

For St. John Fisher, Brady Mason scored three goals, Matt Kemmis had two goals and an assist, and Matt Slowinski produced three assists. Aidan Smith had six groundballs and won 10 faceoffs and Joe Urlacher chipped in five groundballs.

Fisher had narrow leads in shots (36-35), shots on goal (23-18), and groundballs (33-30), but Clarkson's Eric Gellasch was a standout between the posts for the Golden Knights, making 13 saves. Ben Hammond stopped six shots for the Cardinals.
