Second-Ranked RPI Holds Off Knights, 17-12

Potsdam, NY – Two goals midway through the second quarter provided a boost of momentum for the visitors, as the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team suffered a 17-12 loss in Liberty League play to second-ranked Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 6-6 overall and 0-3 in conference games, while RPI remained unbeaten as 12-0 and 4-0. Clarkson hits the road next weekend, taking on another top-five team in RIT.

The opening quarter was essentially even, specifically on the scoreboard as the teams were tied at 4-4 through the first 15 minutes. Roughly four minutes into the second, the teams were still tied after Sam Mancabelli spun in front of the goal to create some shooting space, putting the tally at 5-5 on his goal at 11:09. The Engineers regained the lead about a minute later, but it was a few moments later that RPI was able to have its first multi-goal lead of the contest. Anthony Mazzella scored at 5:49 and the Engineers would keep the ball when a penalty was called, as Mazzella found Zach Swanson for another score 21 seconds later. One more goal later in the quarter allowed the Engineers to head to the locker room with a 9-5 lead thanks to a 14-4 edge in shots in the second period.

RPI continued with its momentum at the start of the third, scoring the first four goals of the period to make it 13-5. Clarkson halted the 8-0 run when Vincent Lavarnway found the twine at 3:31, and Andrew Kearney scored in the final minute to put the Knights back within striking distance. The Engineers responded with two goals in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter to return the margin to eight. A flurry of six goals in the final three-plus minutes created the final margin of 17-12.

Andrew Kearney finished with a five-point day thanks to four goals and an assist. Tyler Hall also chipped in two goals and an assist for three points, and Robert Fox had a goal and an assist in the fourth quarter. Jack Garvey snagged four groundballs, Matt Szwagulinski contributed four caused turnovers and three groundballs, and Eric Gellasch made 11 saves to go along with three groundballs.

For RPI, Luke Murphy had a four-point effort with two goals and two assists, as well as three groundballs and two caused turnovers. Anthony Mazzella matched Murphy's offensive effort, and Zach Swanson scored four goals. Erik Ojert also had three points for the Engineers.
