Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Martino's Late Goal Provides Weekend Sweep for Golden Knights

Hanover, NH – A late goal was called off for the hosts and the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team took advantage, as Ayrton Martino scored with less than three minutes to go to lift the 20th-ranked Golden Knights to a 3-2 win over 14th-ranked Dartmouth on Saturday evening.

The Golden Knights improved to 11-5-2 overall and 5-1-0 in ECAC Hockey play, while the Big Green fell to 6-3-1 and 4-2-1. Clarkson leapfrogged Dartmouth in the ECAC standings, moving up to third despite having played two fewer games than the teams currently in first and second.

Neither team had many grade 'A' opportunities early on, but both teams would get a score before the first period closed. Clarkson was on the board first, spending nearly a minute in the Dartmouth end, including some significant time with one Big Green defender going without a stick. Erik Bargholtz sent a pass across to Trey Taylor near the blue line, and Taylor wristed a shot from the point. However, it was Tristan Sarsland that would score as he was able deflect the puck with the blade of his stick and it trickled over the goal line at 12:01.

While the Knights had plenty of possession, Dartmouth took advantage of an interference call against Clarkson at the 15:34 mark. It took a little under a minute for the Big Green to cash in while up the extra skater. CJ Foley went point-to-point to Nikita Nikora and Nikora took a shot from near the top of the right circle, allowing Cooper Flinton to redirect the puck past the stick side of Ethan Langenegger at 16:23.

The second period began with a 4-on-3 after the Knights were called for a penalty after the final horn, but Clarkson's outstanding penalty kill survived the threat. A few moments later, Ethan Langenegger made a couple of saves on the doorstep to deny the Big Green, and shortly thereafter the Knights were on the power play, but came up empty. The scoreless run in the second would come to an end on a surprising score thanks to a couple of Dartmouth turnovers. The Big Green lost possession of the puck along the boards in the neutral zone and a quick pass from Ellis Rickwood found Ayrton Martino on a cross-ice pass. Martino held the puck behind the net for a few seconds and it appeared as if Dartmouth might escape with a clear, but not enough was behind the attempt as Ellis Rickwood stole the puck and had a couple of chances on the doorstep, converting on his second try to put the Knights up 2-1 at 9:45.

It appeared as if the Knights might make it into the second intermission with the lead, but Dartmouth caught Clarkson on a switch and tied the game at 17:51. The puck scooted out from alongside the boards all the way back to CJ Foley near his own goal. While Clarkson looked to change, Foley recognized the opportunity and whipped a stretch pass all the way to the opposite blue line for Hayden Stavroff, who took a few strides and wristed a shot off the opposite post and in, knotting the game up for a second time.

The Big Green looked like they might have a potential game-winning goal with less than six minutes to go on a pass from CJ Foley through traffic, finding a teammate on the doorstep for a goal at 14:08. However, JF Houle wisely used his challenge and potentially the loss of a timeout to check for offsides and after a lengthy review the officials found that Foley was just a hair over the blue line, nullifying the goal and putting the score back at 2-2.

Clarkson scored just two minutes later on a crafty play from veteran Ayrton Martino. Kaelan Taylor took a hard wrist shot from the top of the slot that was tipped wide by the pad of Dartmouth goaltender Emmett Croteau. However, Martino was the first to the puck behind the net and astutely whipped the puck off of Croteau who was out of the net by a few feet, and the puck bounded over the line at 17:05.

Right off the next faceoff, Croteau left his net to provide Dartmouth an extra skater. However, the Big Green got just one shot on goal in that stretch of close to three minutes. In the final two minutes, Trey Taylor blocked a shot, Talon Sigurdson blocked two, and Tristan Sarsland blocked two hard slapshots in the final 40 seconds to close out the game.

Ethan Langenegger made 20 saves to pick up the win and Emmett Croteau stopped 15 shots with Dartmouth outshooting the Knights 23-18 on goal and 46-41 overall.
