Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Knights Skate to 4-4 Tie with UMass Lowell

Lake Placid, NY – For the second straight day, the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team tied its opponent in regulation, though this time the knot stuck as the Golden Knights finished with a 4-4 tie against UMass Lowell on Saturday evening in the Adirondack Winter Invitational held at Herb Brooks Arena.

The Golden Knights moved to 9-5-2 on the season while Lowell saw its record go to 10-3-1. The River Hawks won the shootout in the eighth round on a Stefan Owens goal, 3-2.

The opening period began without a whistle for nearly seven minutes, though Ryan Taylor almost got the clock to stop when he hit the post at 6:42. That became a recurring theme for the Knights, specifically Ray Fust, whose shot knocked off the post and into the netting at 8:46 and then did again at 8:50 after the next faceoff, with only a heads-up play from Mitchell Becker of UMass Lowell keeping the game scoreless when he cleared the crease with the puck behind the River Hawks goaltender.

Both teams would end their early scoring drought with goals in the final 20 seconds of the period. Ethan Langenegger made a sprawling save against Scout Truman with roughly 40 seconds left in the first period, but Clarkson could not clear the zone and the UMass Lowell offense kept pressing. Eventually Jak Vaarwerk chipped a pass from the bottom of the right circle into the slot for Connor Eddy and he converted with just 18 seconds to go in the frame.

Clarkson responded shortly thereafter as the ensuing faceoff resulted in a penalty when Chris Delaney was whistled for interference on Ryan Richardson as he pulled the Knights' captain down near the blue line. It would take virtually no time for the Knights to cash in with Clarkson winning the faceoff, but Pierson Brandon gaining brief possession near the slot. Richardson stole the puck from behind and went top shelf stick side over Henry Welsch to tie the game with just 8.3 seconds to go in the period.

Few chances showed up in the early second period, but the Golden Knights took advantage of their first real opportunity. In transition out of the Clarkson defensive zone Erik Bargholtz skated along the right wing side and as the Knights filled the lanes on a 3-on-1, Ray Fust scored from the slot at 8:32.

The River Hawks responded similarly to how Clarkson did in the first period, coming right back to tie the game only 17 seconds later. Mirko Buttazzoni collected a pass from Ian Carpentier out of the right side boards, and Buttazzoni skated in for a 1-on-1 with Langenegger and finished with a backhand at 8:49. Just 90 seconds later, Matt Crasa cleaned up a scrum with another goal for the River Hawks. Dillan Bentley flipped the puck on goal and another shot was taken on the opposite post, but the puck hit the post and snuck behind Langenegger, allowing Crasa to tap it in at 10:19.

Clarkson caught a break on a change late in the third period to tie the game. As the Golden Knights rotated players with the forward going last, the River Hawks ended up taking the puck to the other end, where Langenegger was able to make a save. Jack Sparks picked up the rebound off Langenegger's pad and noticed Ryan Richardson had yet to join the play after the late change. Sparks sent a long pass up to Richardson, who was all alone for a 1-on-1 with Welsch, and he beat the UMass Lowell netminder five-hole at 15:51.

Much like the second period, it was a slow start to the third, but again the action began near the midpoint of the stanza. Right after the media timeout, UMass Lowell won the faceoff in the Clarkson defensive zone and would not let the puck escape. Mirko Buttazzoni skated alongside the left side boards trying to create space with Owen Cole tapping his stick on the ice for a pass. Buttazzoni complied and found Cole for a one-timer in the high slot just off the left circle for a goal at 10:25.

Once again, the Golden Knights came back to tie the score for the third time in the game shortly after falling behind. A long pass off the boards saw two skaters racing for the puck in the UMass Lowell end, where Ellis Rickwood gained possession. He sent a pass back to Ayrton Martino near the bottom of the right circle, but Martino fooled the Lowell defense as they expected a one-timer only to see Martino pass the puck back to Rickwood at a tough angle at the bottom of the left circle. With a wide open net, Rickwood easily converted, tying the contest at 14:40.

Both teams had a few opportunities in overtime, but no grade 'A' opportunities. Clarkson had possession in the final minute and took as much time off the clock as possible with some resets when nothing came available. Trey Taylor got a full head of steam and skated in close for a backhand, but Welsch was up to task with nine seconds to go.

Lowell ended with a 27-24 edge in shots on goal. Langenegger had 23 saves and Welsch stopped 20.
