Goffredo's Overtime Goal Lifts Knights Past Yale, 4-3

New Haven, CT – Caroline Goffredo scored during the 3-on-3 overtime session to lift the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team to a 4-3 victory over Yale University in ECAC Hockey action on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights moved to 12-3-1 overall and 5-1-0 in league games, while the Bulldogs fell to 5-5-1 and 4-5-1. Clarkson's next games will occur in Tennessee after Thanksgiving when the team faces University of St. Thomas and Penn State in Nashville.

The game-winner from Goffredo actually bounced off her skate with 1:50 to go in overtime. Anne Cherkowski took a shot, but the puck ended up slipping out of the zone. With Yale seeking a 2-on-1, Haley Winn was back before the Bulldogs could create an offensive chance, and she passed the puck back over center ice to Cherkowski. Goffredo was coming in straight off the bench on the change to create a 2-on-1 for the Knights and Cherkowski's hard pass ended tipping off Goffredo's left skate and into the net. Following a quick review, no kicking motion was determined and the goal stood to give Clarkson the victory.

Yale found itself up by a pair of goals early in the first period, giving the Bulldogs some confidence against the sixth-ranked Knights. Jordan Ray skated in on the right circle to take a shot with no defenders in front of her, but lost the puck. Fortunately for Yale, the mishandled disc went through the crease to Carina DiAntonio, where she was able to finish off the play with a backhand at 6:18. About eight minutes later the Bulldogs make it 2-0 when Sophia Levering's shot in the slow had a rebound bounce right to the stick of Naomi Boucher, and she backhanded the puck past Julia Minotti to make it 2-0 at 14:10.

Clarkson responded with a goal less than three minutes later to shift the momentum before the first intermission. The puck was slowed along the right boards, but Anne Cherkowski was able to pick it out of traffic and sent a pass out to Kirstyn McQuigge at the right point. McQuigge then wristed a shot, using Rhea Hicks as a screen, to beat Pia Dukaric at 16:39.

Only a few minutes into the second period, the Knights scored the equalizer on a solid move from Raedyn Spademan. Jenna Goodwin dumped the puck in and forced Yale to skate hard along with her as she tried to get to the puck first along the boards. None of those skaters were able to collect the loose puck, but Spademan could, gaining possession and using a toe drag to create space before a backhand was lifted over Dukaric with just 3:40 expired off the clock.

The Knights gained the lead after an impressive penalty kill. Haley Winn was whistled for a trip, but turned out to be the goal scorer when she escaped the penalty box. Mariya Rauf ended Yale's power play with a shot from the slow, but the rebound bounced out to Keira Hurry. Winn was looking to join the fray defensively when Hurry gained possession and immediately began skating the other way. Hurry found Winn on the break away, and Winn finished at 11:40.

The game remained 3-2 for the remainder of the second and the start of the third. Yale had a chance with two straight penalties by the Knights, giving them nearly four consecutive minutes while up a skater, but Clarkson kept the Bulldogs without any shots on goal throughout the stretch.

Yale tied the game with just under seven minutes to go. Off a reset from behind the Yale net, Gracie Gilkyson passed to Carina DiAntonio on the left side boards. DiAntonio simply skated up ice and maneuvered through traffic before unleashing a wrist shot that just snuck past Minotti's stick side blocker at 13:34.

Clarkson finished with a 31-24 advantage in shots on goal, though the total tally was closer at 58-53. The Bulldogs went scoreless on four power play chances and the Knights came up empty on their lone power play. Minotti closed the game with 21 saves and Dukaric finished up with 27 stops. Goffredo's goal gives her three on the season, making her the 14th player on the Golden Knights 2024-25 roster to score three times, tying for the most players to do so in a single season in program history (2015-16).
