Goffredo Scores In Final Seconds of Overtime to Lift Knights Past St. Thomas in Nashville

Nashville, TN – Caroline Goffredo scored on a breakaway in overtime just as time was about to expire as the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team picked up a 5-4 victory against University of St. Thomas at the Smashville Showcase.

The Golden Knights moved to 13-3-1 overall while St. Thomas fell to 5-11-1. Clarkson will face Merrimack at 4:00 pm Central Time on Saturday.

The overtime score came right after Rhea Hicks had a breakaway attempt of her own stoned. The puck went deep into the other end as Clarkson made a single switch in the way of Goffredo. Haley Winn stopped the advance by the Tommies and chipped the puck forward to Sena Catterall, who centered the puck back to Goffredo and she was off the to the races the other way with only eight seconds to go. She was able to beat the St. Thomas goaltender five-hole and immediately crashed into the net, knocking it off the moorings to create a conference for the officials. After the discussion, the goal stood and the Knights escaped with the 5-4 overtime win.

Though St. Thomas skated well in the period, the ice seemed to be tipped in the Clarkson offensive end for much of the period. The Golden Knights had nine of the first 10 total shots in the opening seven minutes before St. Thomas had a few opportunities at the Clarkson end. However, once the Tommies were whistled for a penalty around the 11:36 mark, the Knights nationally-ranked power play was put on display and quickly converted. The puck was worked around the point before Haley Winn took a shot from the top of the slot. Winn's wrist shot was redirected by Sena Catterall past Tommies' goaltender Dani Strom at 12:30, less than a minute into the power play, with Winn and Cherkowski assisting.

Less than four minutes later the Knights picked up an even-strength goal. The Tommies cleared their defensive zone, but Haley Winn picked up possession of the loose puck near center ice and had Clarkson attacking once again, adeptly passing the puck off the boards to the right side. Anne Cherkowski gathered up the pass and took a quick wrister, which was denied by Strom, but the rebound came out too far, allowing Rhea Hicks to pounce and wrap the puck around the left blocker and in at 16:04.

St. Thomas cut the margin in half on its very first possession off the opening faceoff of the second. The puck went into the Clarkson defensive end and was not cleared, with Cara Sajevic sending the puck from behind the boards to the left side circle. Ellah Hause beat a Clarkson defender to the puck and flipped it back to Keara Parker. What looked like a harmless wrist shot from the top of the left circle beat Julia Minotti to her left pad side just 19 seconds into the period.

Hard work in the Clarkson defensive end allowed St. Thomas to tie the game, as the Tommies grinded to make sure the puck wouldn't escape. After the puck scooted out to her at the top of the right circle, Alli Pahl took a shot, but it went well wide of the cage. However, Cara Sajevic adeptly lifted her stick and redirected the puck off her blade back in front, finding Keara Parker alone in front for a quick tap in at 9:22.

Clarkson continued to dominate in terms of shots on goal, but it wasn't until late in the second that the Knights would reclaim the lead. Off a failed defensive clearing attempt by the Tommies, Sydney Fess tapped the puck over to Keira Hurry and the sophomore quickly sent the puck forward to Caroline Goffredo near the blue line on the left side. Goffredo then made a couple of moves in front and stuffed the puck in at 16:42. Shortly thereafter, the Knights found themselves down a skater after a tripping penalty, but the Clarkson did what it usually does and blocked a shot before it could find its way through to the goaltender. Nicole Gosling blocked the puck with her skate in the slot and quickly created a transition opportunity, with the Knights skating 3-on-2 the other way. Gosling passed the puck over to Baylee Kirwan on the right side and filled the lane in the center, taking the puck back on a pass to score short-handed at 18:14.

The Tommies nearly cut the deficit to one just a minute into the third when Maddie Brown found herself on a breakaway with two Clarkson skaters right behind her. Brown decided to go to her left, but Minotti's right pad slid in front to deny the attempt and keep the score at 4-2. It looked like Clarkson might end up with a two-goal victory, but the Tommies did get two quick goals late in the third. Maddy Clough kept the puck in the zone while St. Thomas was on the power play and sent it to the left circle for Ella Boerger and one more quick pass through the slot to Lauren Stenslie for a wrist shot made the score 4-3 at 13:58. Off the next faceoff, the Tommies quickly tied the game while the two teams were back at even strength. A one-time from Nicole Vallario appeared to get redirected by Parker and on to the goal. Regardless, Sadie Lindsay was there to clean up the rebound, tipping it over the goal line at 14:11, only 13 seconds after the third goal for St. Thomas.

In overtime, the best chance for the Knights came when Rhea Hicks nearly ended the game with a shot on the right side, but it was stuffed by Strom. The Tommies had two quality chances after that, with Boerger getting a wide open wrist shot in the slot stopped by Minotti. Moments later, St. Thomas had a 2-0, but again Minotti was there to slide across the crease and make a save. Clarkson had the best chances from there on, as Haley Winn nearly scored on two quick chances later and a breakaway from Rhea Hicks was denied when she couldn't quite control the puck on her last move. That set up the final play for the Knights and Goffredo was crowned as hero for the day.

Clarkson finished with a 61-35 edge in shots on goal. Each team scored once on the power play. Minotti had 31 saves for the Knights and Strom made 56 saves for the Tommies.
