Cherkowski Scores Eighth and Ninth of Season in Clarkson's 4-1 Win at Brown

Providence, RI – Anne Cherkowski recorded a three-point night with two goals and an assist, including what proved to be the game-winning score, leading the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Brown University in ECAC Hockey action Friday evening.

The Golden Knights, ranked sixth in the latest USCHO.com poll, improved to 11-3-1 overall and 4-1-0 in ECAC play while Brown dropped to 6-5-0 and 4-5-0. Clarkson extended its unbeaten streak against the Browns to 33 straight (30-0-3).

The first period started off a little sloppy, as neither team could muster much offensively. Clarkson's first solid chance came about six minutes in, but unfortunately the whistle was blown despite the puck sliding out to the stick of Haley Winn near the right dot. Brown was similarly snake bit when an odd bounce off the boards gave the Bears a great opportunity to score with Julia Minotti out of the net, but no one was there to crash the net.

Clarkson broke through to score the first goal of the game just 75 seconds into the second period. A turnover behind the net, forced by Sena Catterall, gave possession to Rhea Hicks. Without a defender around her, Hicks was able to skate back to the front of the net unencumbered and was able to stuff the puck past Brown goaltender Rory Edwards.

A few minutes later, Brown was whistled for a penalty, allowing the Knights to take advantage of their highly-ranked power play unit. Clarkson kept the Bears on the ice for a lengthy period and Anne Cherkowski deked a Brown defender to drop without taking a shot. From there, the senior patiently skated into extra space and used a double-screen by Catterall and Brown's Ella Muralt. Cherkowski wristed a shot to the opposite post as Edwards never had a chance with her vision on the attempt totally blocked.

Brown skated well down the stretch and picked up a key opportunity when Clarkson was called for a body-check. The Bears gained a bit of luck while on the power play as Monique Lyons took a shot that would have been well wide of the net, but luckily for Brown the skate ricocheted off Ava DeCoste's skate in the slot and snuck past an unsuspecting Minotti at 19:15 in the second.

Most of the third period was spent in the Brown defensive zone, as Clarkson had a dozen shots with 10 going on goal prior to the media timeout. Among those many shots, the Knights were able to get on through the Brown defense on the power play. Hicks was able to dig the puck out along the right side boards, tipping it back to Nicole Gosling. The captain then chipped a pass over to Anne Cherkowski point-to-point and Cherkowski sent it back to the top of the right circle for Haley Winn, who wristed it through traffic at 3:13.

Shortly after the media timeout concluded, the Knights put the game away with a fourth goal. Again it was Cherkowski with her second goal of the game. Clarkson picked up possession deep in their defensive zone with Sidney Fess skating along the right side boards from one end of the rink to the other. She wisely fed Cherkowski on the doorstep, who niftily backhanded the puck in at 12:53 in the third.

Clarkson closed out the game with a 47-16 edge in shots and went 2-for-3 on the power play against Brown's 1-for-3 run while up a skater. Julia Minotti made 15 saves and Rory Edwards stopped 43 shots.
