Clarkson Runs Win Streak to Three with Two Saturday Victories

New Paltz, NY – An impressive comeback in the opener gave the Clarkson University Volleyball team momentum for a sweep in its second match of the day as the Golden Knights won a pair of matches Saturday afternoon, downing SUNY New Paltz in five sets (25-21, 19-25, 23-25, 29-27, 15-9) and then sweeping Baruch College in three (25-18, 25-16, 25-7).

The Golden Knights improved to 7-10 on the year. The team will be back at home next weekend, taking on Skidmore College and Cortland State on Saturday, October 12th.

In the opening set against New Paltz, Clarkson led throughout, taking a 6-1 lead early and doubling up the Hawks at 16-8 following kills from Tess Sorel and Ashley Currier. New Paltz would crawl back to within two (21-19), but the Knights closed things out on a kill from Marin Hangliter.

New Paltz controlled the second set much the same way that the Knights did the first, coming away with a six-point win, and the third set again went the way of the Hawks. Clarkson led early but four kills in a short stretch from Letisha Perez allowed New Paltz to take the lead at 9-5. Clarkson would get back within one once, but New Paltz used another run to take a five-point lead late (24-19). The Knights did score four straight to put pressure on the Hawks, but a kill by Maria Weigand ended the threat.

The fourth set was a comeback of incredible proportions for Clarkson. Trailing by eight points (23-15) with the match appearing all but over, Clarkson chipped away with two kills and an ace to make it 23-18, only to see the Hawks gain one to make it match point. It would remain match point for a while, as the Knights continued the comeback, starting off with kills from Allyson Treichel, Marin Hangliter, and Cecilia Velardi to make it 24-21, and then a kill from Ashley Currier, block assists from Treichel and Currier, and another kill from Treichel tied the set at 24-24. Clarkson had its own set point after a solo block from Treichel, but the game went on. Again, New Paltz had a match point at 27-26, but it would not go the Hawks' way, as Grace Hanson had back-to-back kills and Treichel put the set away with an ace.

New Paltz recovered with three straight points to start the fifth set, but Clarkson rattled off seven straight, including four kills from Tess Sorel, to take the lead. The Hawks tied it at 7-7, but that was the last gasp, as Clarkson pulled away, winning on a kill from Hangliter.

Hangliter finished with 21 kills and eight digs, while Grace Hanson added 14 kills and 10 digs. Allyson Treichel had 11 kills with three blocks and two aces, and Tess Sorel hit .375 with nine kills. Ashley Currier ran the offense with 40 assists while also adding in 16 digs, six kills and four aces. Defensively, Abigail Spector had 26 digs, to go along with seven assists and a pair of aces, Velardi had 15 digs, and Olivia Baxter chipped in 15 digs.

Throughout the second match of the day, Clarkson led for nearly every moment. Clarkson started off strong in the first set against Baruch as Grace Hanson accounted for three kills in the Knights' first six points. Baruch did come back to take a 10-8 lead off some miscues by the Knights, but Clarkson got those back with a kill from Marin Hangliter and four attack errors by the Bearcats. The Knights then went on a 6-0 run, all on kills, to make it 19-11, and a kill from Marin Hangliter ended the set, 25-18.

The second set saw the Knights open with four kills and an ace, though Baruch battled back to within one (9-8). Clarkson responded with an 8-1 run thanks to two aces from Cecilia Velardi and four kills from Allyson Treichel. The two teams then exchanged 4-0 runs and Hangliter once again ended the set with a kill, 25-16. That late run by the Knights continued in the third and final set, as Clarkson opened with 10 of the first 11 points and 13 of the first 15 to cruise to an easy victory.

Clarkson hit .313 (41-10-99) in the match, just a few decimal points off the season-high. Hanson was 12-2-29 in the match against Baruch, while Hangliter added nine kills. Treichel had seven kills and a pair of blocks and Haley Currier also produced seven kills. Ashley Currier again contributed in a variety of ways, posting 31 assists along with four kills, three aces, and five digs. Abigail Spector led the team with 14 digs, while Velardi was tough from the service line with five aces to go along with her 12 digs.
