Knights Fall Twice Versus Skidmore and Cortland

Potsdam, NY – A three-match winning streak came to an end for the Clarkson University Volleyball team on Saturday as the Golden Knights suffered a four-set defeat against conference foe Skidmore College before also dropping a three-set match against Cortland State at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights moved to 7-12 overall and 1-3 in the Liberty League and will face St. Lawrence University next Friday evening. Clarkson dropped the first match to Skidmore in four sets (16-25, 25-14, 25-22, 25-19) and then lost in three to Cortland (25-23, 25-21, 25-17).

In the first set, the Knights trailed early, but turned things around near the midway point, going on a five-point run to take control at 16-10 following an ace from Olivia Baxter. Skidmore picked up two points to tighten the set, but another run of four for Clarkson all but put the set away.

The second set again saw Skidmore get a lead early, but this time the Thoroughbreds would not cough it up, pushing the margin to 11-4 early on. Clarkson climbed back to within four on two occasions, but Skidmore had answers each time on offense and had no issue returning the favor to the Knights to cruise to a wide margin of victory.

Set three was a back and forth affair, though Skidmore picked up five straight points near the halfway mark of the set to take a 15-12 lead. The set remained tight with the two teams separated by just two points (22-20 and 24-22). A kill from Rudi Reyes kept the Knights from completing the comeback.

At the start of the fourth, it appeared as if the match was destined for five sets. Clarkson started off with five of the first six points and led by seven (13-6) thanks to back-to-back kills from Haley Currier and Grace Hanson. Skidmore went on a 14-2 run to flip the deficit into a five-point lead at 20-15, and Clarkson's response was only brief, as Skidmore held on for a six-point margin of victory.

For Clarkson, Grace Hanson and Marin Hangliter each made it to double figures in kills, with Hanson getting to 15 and Hangliter notching 13. Ashley Currier was just short of a double-double on 33 assists and nine digs, while Abigail Spector (14 digs), Cecilia Velardi (12 digs), and Olivia Baxter (11 digs) each made it to double figures on defense. Allyson Treichel also picked up for blocks, two solo and two as assists.

Skidmore got 10 kills from Natalie Pederson and both Jazlin Chen and Angie Mozrall scored nine kills. Catriona Hoelperl had 24 assists and 12 digs, and Athena Braverman had 17 digs from the back row.

After suffering the defeat against Skidmore, Clarkson came out strong against arguably the tougher opponent for the day. Although Cortland's offense struck for an average of 16 kills per set, the Knights reached double figures in each as well with sold hitting percentages accompanying the effort. The two teams exchanged small runs at the start as neither could get much of a foothold until late. With the set tied at 18-18, Cortland picked up three straight kills, all from Anna Pilkey, only to see the Knights respond with five straight points, including three from Marin Hangliter. The Knights led 23-21, but Cortland responded with four straight, getting two clutch kills from Alexa Guedez and an ace from Pilkey.

Set two mirrored the first, with small runs the order of the game. Clarkson was within one (18-17) when Kyrah Wilbur notched a kill and Samantha Rodriguez gained an ace for a three-point cushion on the side of the Red Dragons. Although a block from Allyson Treichel halted the run briefly, Cortland scored four straight and waited out the Knights before winning by four, 25-21. The third saw Cortland hold a small margin for most of the set, gradually increasing the lead before finally settling at a gap of eight points.

Hangliter had 15 kills in the second match while both Allyson Treichel and Grace Hanson had six kills. Ashley Currier posted 26 assists, nine digs, and four block assists, usually in combination with Tess Sorel who had six total blocks on one solo and five assists. Spector notched 17 digs and Velardi added 13 more digs.

Cortland's Anna Pilkey and Jennifer Koestner each recorded 10 kills in the match, while Ryan Hinshaw and Samantha Rodriguez split setting duties with 22 and 14 assists, respectively. Mikenzie Martens was busy in the back row, picking up 31 digs.
