Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Three Third Period Goals Allow Knights to Pull Away, 5-1

Potsdam, NY - A trio of goals in a stretch of less than 10 minutes in the third period saw the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team turn a tight game into a run away as the Golden Knights picked up a 5-1 win over Vermont Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights improved to 4-0 on the season while the Catamounts fell to 0-2. Clarkson will host Robert Morris University next weekend for a pair of afternoon contests on Friday and Saturday.

For the first time in the 2024-25 season, the Golden Knights trailed when Vermont was able to pick up a goal in the first two minutes of Saturday's contest. The Catamounts found themselves on a 2-on-1 entering their offensive zone and while Grace Nelles filled space in the slot creating an option, Lara Beecher held on to the puck and wristed a shot in at 1:43 to give Vermont a 1-0 lead.

Vermont would hold the advantage for another 11-plus minutes before Clarkson knotted things up at 13:11. The Knights held possession in their zone while fresh skaters came on the ice and off that slight change, Jenna Goodwin sent in a wrist shot from the top of the right circle to tie the game, with Haley Winn and Kirstyn McQuigge gaining assists.

Clarkson took the lead midway through the second period. Sena Catterall skated behind the Vermont net and found McQuigge near the left circle, where she sent a pass across ice to the right point for Andie Proulx. Her wrist shot sailed through plenty of traffic and got past Jane Gervais at 9:56.

Although Clarkson dominated in shots on goal (28-5) through the first 40 minutes, the Knights found themselves with only a narrow 2-1 lead through two periods. That would change in the middle minutes of the third when Raedyn Spademan flipped in a rebound at 7:04. Shelby Laidlaw dropped a pass to Jenna Goodwin, who skated into the slot and tossed a backhand shot on net. Gervais made the save for Vermont, but Spademan was there to clean up the easy rebound to make it 3-1.

Clarkson added two more insurance goals in the final six minutes. A bad pass from a Vermont defender kicked off the boards and into the Knights' offensive zone where Jenna Smellie picked up possession. She skated around the back of the net and found Andie Proulx at the left point. Proulx sent a shot through a number of skaters in front of the net, and the puck may have deflected off a Vermont defender, but regardless it slipped past Gervais at 14:24. Just two minutes later, the Knights scored on the power play with Spademan again being active in front. Sidney Fess tossed the puck on net from the point and Spademan tipped it, but the shot was saved. Vermont was unable to clear the puck and Goodwin somehow redirected the puck to Spademan just outside the crease for a goal at 16:41.

The Knights finished with a 42-12 edge in shots overall, with both Proulx and Spademan scoring twice and Goodwin tallying three points on a goal and two assists. Holly Gruber made 11 saves in the Clarkson crease, and Gervais stopped 37 shots for the Catamounts.
